episode (1977): REINCARNATION

Synopsis:

Barnaby Jones and his nephew sidekick, Jedediah Romano Jones, know an acquaintance, a pretty young woman, Gwen Mantlaw (Deborah White) who is engaged to a handsome young man, David Burke (John David Carson).
Gwen brings David home to meet her stepmother, Diane Magnus (Vera Miles). Diane is a widow; her late husband was the biological father of Gwen.
Very soon, things become strange. David seems to bear personality traits and physical habits similar to Diane's deceased husband. More, David bears a remote resemblence to the dead husband. It gets stranger. David seems to know things about Diane's past with her late husband. While at a boat dock, David corrects Diane about tying the boat's docking rope to the dock metal stanchion in the proper knotting way, something Diane's late husband used to do. Pretty soon these little quirks and odd personality coincidences start working on Diane's head and a strange attraction grows between the two. Diane starts to feel that David might be some sort of reincarnation of David although the episode doesn't depict her totally buying into the idea.
It doesn't take long before Diane and David begin a relationship. The former fiancee, Gwen, is stunned and tells her acquaintance friend, Jedediah. But from that point on, Gwen is no longer in the episode.
Shortly after, Diane and David elope to Las Vegas for a quick marriage. There is a mysterious scene where David is on the telephone telling someone that everything has gone according to plan. Diane sees him talking but when she inquires, David sends her away by asking for more celebration champagne.
To make a long story short, upon their return back home, which is near the lake boating area, they settle down into married life. But David's behavior seems oddly out-of-whack. He's just not quite normal. He starts to exhibit mild signs of personality psychosis which alarms his new wife. The truth reveals itself towards the end of the episode when the former maid of the family shows up and kidnaps Diane, walking her out to the boat dock. The son, David follows along, holding a kitchen knife. Her intentions are not all that clear. But the maid, Karen Palmer (Nancy Priddy) reveals the mystery. Many years ago, Karen had a brief affair with Diane's late husband. Karen became pregnant but the husband refused to leave Diane and marry her. In a fit of pique, Karen murdered the husband, which went unsolved all these years. Karen gave birth to a son. Over the years, Karen kept feeding the son information about Diane and the dead husband until she warped him into believing he was the reincarnation of the dead man. The former maid's long-term plan was to inflict revenge upon Diane.
Barnaby Jones and Jedediah show up in the nick of time. David is there with his mother and Diane, brandishing the knife. But Barnaby talks him into giving up, and at that point the son, David, experiences something of a mild personality nervous breakdown, yelling, 'she murdered me!' Jedediah jumps David's mother and restrains her. When the mother, Karen, gives up, rambling on to Barnaby about her justification and her life being ruined because of Diane and her dead husband, Barnaby points to her son, David, standing there, looking on almost zombie-like. Barnby admonishes the psycho mother Karen, telling her, look what've you've done to him, what about him? The episode ends.

With all of that, there's still no mention of the 'accidental' death of the doctor who knew of David's birthright...that was what brought Barnaby into the case in the first place.
