on TCM this week

This entertaining biopic about North America's favorite Brit is rarely seen, but TCM is showing it this week (Aug 6). Don't miss it, because the studio pinheads refuse to release this movie on dvd in North America.

LOL, the same thing happened to me! Good movie, excellent cast and nice use of jump cuts, flash forwards and flashbacks.

That happens a lot to me with TCM. I swear I'm not going to watch some movie I've seen 10 times before and then I watch the whole thing. It's so nice to not have commercials. I like that when they show a musical, they play all the music, from overture to intermission. And I like Robert Osborne too.

I don't think I'm really their target audience (urban black hip-hop/jazz loving male), but I get hooked all the time. With Young Winston, I could not believe how good and raw Robert Shaw was or how young and genteel Anthony Hopkins was.

TCM is da bomb-dot-com!

And well worth the watching. I had made other plans for this afternoon, but got hooked almost immediately. But I do wish we could see the whole "director's cut" version.

I wonder what TCM used as the source material. There is a European region disc that was released about a year ago - it would be fantastic if a North American region disc came out. Are you listening, Columbia Pictures?

Is there another movie about the rest of Churchill's life? I saw documentary and after the war he lost office almost immediately. I kinda thought the English would be more grateful. Whatta serious dude. I wish we had leaders like that around today.

I'd really like to see 'Young Winston' on a decent DVD release in the United States.

Other good Churchill related movies are:

'Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years 1929 - 1939' Robert Hardy does an excellent job as Churchill in this eight hour miniseries.

'The Gathering Storm' with Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave is an HBO movie from 2002. It is wonderful but I wish it was longer. It covers the same time period as 'The Wilderness Years'. Finney is awesome in the role.

'Into the Storm' with Brendan Gleeson as Churchill is an HBO movie from 2009 that covers Churchill during WWII. While very good it is much too short. This was the most important time in Churchill's life and should be dealt with in detail.

'World War II - When Lions Roared ' is a fascinating TV movie from 1994 that that has Bob Hoskins playing Churchill, John Lithgow as FDR, and Michael Caine as Stalin. It is very good and worth seeking out on DVD.

Harmonica: An ancient race.

Your welcome. Always glad to see someone interested in this remarkable man.

Churchill is one of my favorite historical characters and I really enjoy books and movie depictions of the man.

On eBay there are sometimes region free copies. I had one that looked "OK" but I was much happier with the region 2 disc... and my region free player!
