The trivia mentions that Simon Ward was second choice for young Churchill. I read in an interview with James Fox in a contemporary issue of PHOTOPLAY (UK) that he was preparing for the role, so he seems to have been first choice. Does anyone know why that didn't come about?

I have read that Malcolm MacDowell was offred Winston.

James Fox retired from acting from 12 years or so because he became involved in religous work.

I know about James Fox' retirement for religious reasons. But he was actually preparing for the role, and this was long before his retirement. The film seems to have been delayed for a long time.
