Finally Coming On TCM

Next Tuesday early AM.

I have been tracking this movie several times a year for the past 3 or 4 years, hoping maybe it would be released on DVD. It is only available on VHS, and only on Ebay. I've seen it go for over $100, and never for less than $35. I am so glad I'm finally going to be able to see it again, for the first time in more than 30 years.

TCM finally broadcast this gem after me begging for YEARS for it to be shown. It was better than I had remembered. ***SPOILER*** LaLiz was wonderful and how Michael Caine could go for that insipid little twit (Susannah York) is beyond me. Great to see and it is gonna stay on my DVR for a long time.

I loved this movie when it first came out, but I feel that it hasn't aged well. First of all, I now realize how hideous we all looked in that era. But most of all, the ending would absolutely not make any sense today. Why should Stella feel remotely humiliated by her lesbian tryst with Zee, she certainly had no shame about cavorting very openly with a married man. And as for Robert, why should that make him leave Stella to go back to Zee, by today's more open standards of sexuality, he'd be in hetero male heaven. Two beautiful women fighting over him and also getting it on with each other. If anything he's just made his chances even better. I also found the portrayal of homosexuals, even if very daring for that era, very stereotypical and somewhat homophobic.
