Music changed at end!

OMG! I watched the lovely new UK SONY DVD last night and thoroughly enjoyed it until the cast played at the end- the theme song "Going in Circles" they replaced with another version! Unbelievable! When the picture stops and the song begins for the ending credits, I knew there was trouble when the song began: "I'm goin' in circles", when in fact it should say "Goin' in circles".

The group who did the soundtrack were Three Dog Night but when the song plays at the end, it sounds very different and nowhere near as good as the original version. The song that SONY have put on this DVD also makes the ending credits a minute or so less.
Why did they do this?

Well lets ask. I mean, aside from this it's a wonderful DVD!

yes at the conclusion of the film, the music sounded wrong on this DVD so I immediately dug out my VHS recording off Sky and compared them both. The DVD has the right song but wrong voice! We just can't win, can we? First Sony do the DVD in Spain but bugger it up and now they do it in London, a beautiful anamorphic transfer, crisp picture & sound quality but with the song switched at the end! Damn!

I too am a bit disappointed with this but it doesn't ruin the film.

I agree with that. We can't knock this dvd. It's beautiful. I would like to know what happened to the ending song though; lets ask Sony.

it is and also the original song is what all fans who know the film expect to hear! This dreadful replacement that Sony have put on this DVD doesn't even last as long and all the nice music just aint there!

i e-mailed Colin at Sony in London about this issue on Monday, 5 days ago, and still no answer.

I imagine this is something of a mystery for Colin. I know he worked hard to get this released on DVD so he won't want to disappoint any fans of this film. This DVD is a beautiful print and it's a little sad with the theme song changed at the end but no enjoyment of the film is lost.

I couldn't get it quick enough! It's really superb quality, way better than the release by SONY in Spain months back, and this UK one has the complete film too! 10 out of 10 for picture & sound quality, very nice indeed and in widescreen. A must.

My fave Eliz T. movie, and how great it's out on DVD. Too bad about the song, but Taylor fans have already suffered a similar disappointment when "Ash Wednesday" went to VHS. During an important clich between Eliz and Helmut Berger, the song over the soundtract is Ray Charles' "Ruby.." and it is so right for the moment (and the plot of that film) with its lyrics, "Ruby, you're like a dream/not always what you seem..."

The VHS has some uninspiring dirge in place of "Ruby." I can only assume copyright or royalties issues; probbaly the same with "Going In Circles" from "Zee."

XY & Zee is going to be on TCM on 8/24/10 @ 2AM EST, anyone know if the TCM print is "changed"?

reply

All I can say is - wait and see. Who knows if the TCM print will be the one everyone remembers? And re: the song. It is almost ALWAYS a rights issue when music is changed, so going on and on about "why did 'they' change it" is pointless. "They" had no choice. Ask 3 Dog Night's catalogue copyright holders for an answer.

reply

Is that the original tune? I think it is. If so, thank you again,
TCM. (I have thanked that company too many times...but they seem to be pretty decent at showing movies with the original version intact).

uncut and commercial free. BUT NOT...logo free. What's up with THAT????

reply

The logo appears at the most 2-3 times per movie, depending on movie length and for like a minute or two. It is small and with no animations like their sister stations TNT and TBS. It is definitely a legal thing. No logo would mean that bootleggers would sell these films illegally as if they were originals or studio releases.

The same thing happened in the movie "Love at First Bite" when they removed the Alicia Bridges song, "I Love the Night Life" that George Hamilton danced to with Susan St. James with some other garbage song. THAT ruined the whole movie! At least this time with Goin' in Circles the whole movie wasn't ruined.
