The ending (not really SPOILERS)

I saw the film last night and at the end, the film freezes just as Michael Caine is about to say something to Elizabeth Taylor, the music begins and the credits start to roll.

I've read there are different versions of the film. Do they all end in this way?

Interestingly, Michael Caine seems to have 'misremembered' the film. In his autobiography, he refers to the Elizabeth Taylor character as leaving her husband for another woman and he also said that he had very little acting time with Susannah York.

It's unusual that what he remembers from the film is quite different from the film itself.
