The fashions...

...in this film are horrendous! This period in the early 1970´s is the ugliest time in fashion history. (But also quite fun!) Fashion has never been quite so mad and ugly since then.

It was very brave of Liz and Susannah to wear those clothes - as if they were the coolest threads ever! In a sense they are so outrageous that they become a big part of the enjoyment of the film!

Susannah York is pretty but that hair-do she wears is the ugliest ever captured on film! Liz is beautiful despite going overboard with the blue eye-shadow!

Oh my goodness, I don't know where to begin. Which are your favourite outfits from the film? My might be the deep purple halter neck ensemble Liz tries on in Sue's shop.

reply

I couldn't notice the fashions. The ten pounds of makeup on Liz's face kept distracting me.

reply

Taylor wasn't being brave at all--that's EXACTLY how she dressed at the time. We who are old enough to recall, were driven deliriously insane with each crazy outfit. (Including super-short, super-tight hot-pants!)

As for the make-up, again--that's how she wore in real-life and why be subtle, anyway?

reply

Haha! I suppose she could get away with it being a huge star and all. Not very subtle… She just didn't care, did she?

Wow, thank you so much for those pics! I could see three of your links and those outfits could have looked really good on Liz. I don't remeber them being in the film (it is a while since I saw it).

I think what happened was that when Liz came to London to film it she chose to go out and buy real Carnaby Street fashions instead, thinking they were more cool and "young" than Edith's designs...

Wow, where did you find those scetches for Liz's costumes? Amazing to see. Thanks! They were too understated to be in "XYZ"!

It has been released on dvd and it is there were I saw those terrible fashions. Liz may be outrageously dressed but it is nothing compared to the abomination that is Susanna Yorks hair-do in that film. That alone is the worst hair cut ever in a motion picture!

Thank you.

Too funny about the fashions. Forgot this film but also "Driver's Seat" based on the Muriel Spark short story was another quite bizarre 1970's type film.

I agree Ms. Taylor was one of a kind beauty. Few could imitate her style today.

I like your Liz blog. Nice pictures of her! Wow.
