Nice Role for Victor Buono!

He usually played oily villains or heavy-set, sissified men; kinda refreshing to see him in ONE movie where he's something of a good guy with backbone!

I agree. The entire cast was good but Buono was excellent in this movie and stole every scene he was in.

I don't see him as a "... goodguy with backbone."He's one of the protagonists, anad certainly less evil than the Langella character, but he's still a crook who absconded with the regimental funds, and morally ambiguous.
What's really interesting is that he's having a lot of fun doing Sydney Greenstreet.

Too bad you didn't quote me more fully, schweinhundt1967, because I *qualified* my "good guy with a backbone" phrase by preceeding it with "something of a..." thus implying I'm still aware that the Buono character is no angel. Nevertheless, both he and fellow ne'er-do-well Robert Mitchum acquitted themselves quite well in their valiant heroics, wouldn't you agree?

It could also be argued that Buono eventually discards his reluctance to participate in what amounts to a suicide mission as, perhaps, a means of self-redemption from the very past misdeeds of his to which you alluded.

PS: I like your Buono/Greenstreet observation! Well put!
