great scenery

I just saw this on AMC and was impressed with the beautiful photography, especially in the first 20 minutes with the boy and the bear. There seemed to be a special "thank you" in the beginning credits to the native american nations involved. Does anyone agree with me?

I'm actually in the middle of watching this movie with my family right now and I have to say that this film has made a special place in my heart. I felt so sad and sick watching the young Ute boy (Thomas) being hauled off to the reservation by a supposed friend of the family. I hate the very thought of what early explorers and the early United States did to the Native American Nations and how much they were taken advantage of so harshly and without remorse. This movie just made me think of all those things at once and how some people just want to be left alone with what they remember and all we can do is answer with hateful remarks and try to break a culture till there's nothing left of it. Be it Ute, Cherokee, Osage or Kickapoo doesn't matter, these people deserved far better than what we gave them. This is a film that should be seen by anyone interested how the old ways can be forgotten and how the new ways can corrupt and make us wish for better times.

It is still not on dvd for sale in USA but the Fox Movie Channel has run it twice recently so keep an eye on that channel and see if they have schedule it again. It is a very good drama, in my opinion, but I am sure it does not do justice to the book.

Im from the area it was filmed. It was actually filmed in Ignacio Co and the surrounding area. Same as in book. That is the So. Ute reservation The childhood part, the boys dorm. Some of the dorms are still standing and are used for tribal govt buildings. My aunt was one of the baton twirlers in the parade. Used to pass where the house burned down in the film everyday. That was my stepmothers family. Coincidentally, Fred Forrest was my father's best man at his first wedding to my bio mother. He is also part Indian like my father. Small funny world....

I remember watching this movie when I was around 14 and I was home sick from school and this movie came one of the afternoon movies and I really enjoyed it. I had seen it on tv a few times since and have always liked it. The movie had great scenery and the acting was really good. I watched it the other nite on Direc TV and was still impressed with it.
