I just saw this movie for the first time and thought it was increduible!!! So funny and casting was GREAT!!!!!! I read that Barbra Streisand didnt want to do this movie. Is it just me, or does Streisand never want to do a movie thats not her own?

This was one of my favorite movies when I was little, but it hasn't aged well. I used to think Streisand was hilarious in this movie, now she seems irritating, like a canker sore. And some of the comedy doesn't work, like when the man kept tripping the rich old woman, it was dumb physical comedy that was kind of disturbing. Buck Henry's writing still holds up pretty well though, and the dialogue and acting are pretty good.

I have to disagree with all of you, I liked it a lot the first time I saw it, and I think it just gets better the more times I see it. I love it!

shareI so agree!! Madeline Kahn was so underappreciated as a comic actress. I would (and have) watch her in everything she's been in (oops, except when she was on Bill Cosby's show - not a Cosby fan at all...). All the good ones die young.
She did steal the picture, but the character actors - Kenneth Mars, Randy Quaid, Austin Pendleton, yada yada - really glued the movie together.
I'm 43 and I've been watching this movie every time it's been on TV since I was about 15. Love it!!
You're about my age. I was 10 years old during the summer of 1972 and saw this movie 14 times that summer, sometimes with family, but mostly with friends.
Got the VHS and later the DVD. Can't even begin to count how many times I've seen it now. It just keeps getting better.

shareI read your post and I just had to comment that I thought it was hysterically funny when Sorrell Booke kept tripping Mabel Albertson in an attempt to stall her. I fell on the floor the first time I saw it and I can't wipe the smile off my face thinking about it now. I thought it was funny as hell.
shareI love this movie too, and yes, Streisand was miserable during its filming...she thought the script was stupid and had no confidence in director Bogdonovich. To this day, she doesn't even like to talk about this movie, but I still love it. I also think Barbra never looked lovlier onscreen than she did in this film.

shareI have loved this funny movie since I was a kid and can watch it again and again. The character actors do make the movie (Kenneth Mars, Madelaine Kahn, Austin Pendleton etc) but Ryan O'Neil is so stuffy, confused and adorable, and Babs looks casually pretty (before the perm...nuff said) and is funny, annoying, invigorating etc.
The plaid bag plot is sort of clever too.
Great slapstick romantic comedy that hold up.
One of the funniest movies ever made. I must have seen it over thirty times now, and it is one of my most cherished DVDs. To the people who think the detective's repeated tripping of the old lady is disturbing, actually it's the absurdity of it that's so funny. He actually thinks it's "charm"ing to trip her over and over. Watch closely and you'll notice that when the elevator doors open, she's getting up from having been tripped yet again. How he tripped her in an elevator is a mystery known only to the great comedy giants.
shareI'm a fan of the old screwball comedies, "It Happened One Night," and "His Girl Friday," particularly, and this fits in right along with them. I saw someone on another board slagging off Bogdanovich, saying that he had once been good at making 'homage,' movies... (Whaaaaaaaaat??!!)
What's Up, Doc is no homage; it's the real thing, of course, pretty much as good as the very best of what went before, and much better than a lot.

You've never really experienced this movie unless you've seen it in a theater full of people. I saw it 3-4 times during its original release, and it's always a scream. My whole family still loves it every time we watch it.
Howard-"Don't count, Eunice, I it when you count."
Eunice-"I'M COMING IN!!!"
Cab Driver, dockside-"You don't want me to wait, do ya?"
Eunice-"Well, yes I do."

Some critics panned Ryan O'Neal for not measuring up to Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby. I thought he did a great job of playing Howard Bannister, not Cary Grant.
Released in '72, part of the ad campaign featured a radio spot with two guys speaking rapidly in unison--"Remember when you could go to the movies and see two people falling in love without falling in bed?"--How times have changed.
Great film, still as funny as it was when it was first made and Streisand makes the film of course.
shareOne of those movies I'd just never got around to seeing though always heard how funny it was. Finally saw it tonight and loved it. It just builds up on you and from about a third of the way through you just can't stop laughing. Really good!
