AWFUL!!!

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW gets totally blasted by imdb people (here and again) but this movie, which is downright awful, gets all praises, zero negative comments.

i guess it's one of those movies that people dont care enough about it to comment on it if they hated it.

peter bogdonavitch went from making one of the best movies, LAST PICTURE SHOW, and his ego got the best of him and he then made this horrendous movie.

it was a hit, i realize... which means nothing.

HORRIBLE MOVIE!

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, and not everyone can like the same movie, but I've never heard anything really BAD about this movie (which I think is a comedy gem). I can understand if you didn't think it was all that good, or if you couldn't see what all the fuss was about, for instance, but I can't understand how you could think it was HORRIBLE or awful. I think it's a really well-made movie, with brilliant lines and comic timing, and wonderful performances. Oh well.

You can't come away from the intense feelings you have for Sam the Lion et al and expect to jump right into the frenzied fiasco that is "What's Up Doc." When you say "HORRIBLE MOVIE"..you don't so much give an opinion of this movie as you tell us what you know about movie making. This movie stands on it's own and even has a few classic moments. The same can be said for "The Last Picture Show" It is not wise to compare them. They are like two very different very strong liquors. The result is you wind up affected by the similarities in the process of making them. But what goes down your throat is very different in each case. Directors are story tellers and in each case the story got told.

No, he gave an opinion of this movie.

On the other hand, you don't so much as give an opinion as you tell us what you know about what an opinion means.

Dude, are you insane? You obviously have NO sense of humor and positively no sense for comedic film, good writing or great comic performances. You must be really dim to have the humor and charms of this film escape you. And, you must be a dreadful bore in real life. What a dope.

reply

Hehehe. Well, I didn't want to say that, but I know we were all thinking it!

I really do believe that WUD is one of the top few comedies ever made. If you come away from it wanting to quote every single line, because every line is as funny as the next (and that's pretty damn funny), then there can't be much wrong with the film.

Fricking awesome script!!!

"She's a gem Bannister, a gem, and you're a lucky dog."

It is one of the best comedy films of all times. Madeline kahn (rip) was a comedic gem nearly stealing the film from Babs.

reply

Damn straight.

I must admit I'm not a fan of The Last Picture Show, but I think it's a mistake to compare it with WUD just because they were by the same director. The two films have NOTHING in common whatsoever besides that (oh, and Randy Quaid, heheh). So naturally they're going to appeal to different tastes and feelings.

Wow! I'm really surprised someone would think this movie was HORRIBLE. I don't see how someone with any kind of a sense of humor wouldn't laugh at this movie. Madeline Kahn is so awesome in it, as is Barbra and Ryan. Actually, everyone in the movie does a fantastic job. I think it is an overlooked comic masterpiece.

Of course, I understand you are entitled to your own opinion. I was just curious if you didn't like the actors, or the directing, or didn't care for the humor? Just wondering what made you hate it so much. Maybe you hate it because you are trying to compare it to The Last Picture Show and haven't really given it a chance. It is such a different kind of movie than Last Picture Show (which I also loved, by the way) that I don't even try to compare the two. I just accept this movie for what it is - a screwball comedy made to entertain people and make them laugh.

reply

Awful? That's crazy talk.

I know you didn't intend it, but it sounds as if you think you are one member of a select audience that enjoys The Last Picture Show. You're not...lots of people think it's a good movie. The people on here aren't trying to take that away--they're simply saying that What's Up, Doc? is good too. Which is okay, because although by the same director, the two films share very little.

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.

This movie is a laugh riot, funny as hell, one of my favorites, Bogdanovich at his best! I agree with the other poster you have no sense of humor.

Tell us a movie that you think is GREAT. I'm curious to know your taste in movies, and how you can find a totally innocent, light-hearted comedy to be awful.
