Do you think that after this movie anyone REALLY tried this scam....

Order room service and tell them to leave the tray outside the room- then sneak up and take it "to go" ??
For one thing; the operator / switchboard would see this as an OUTSIDE caller? Yes? no ?
P.S.
..."and a big glass of diet anything"
I use that line in diners!!! LOL!

I don't know about hotels in 1972, but now it wouldn't work - not at the kind of hotel that "What's Up, Doc?" takes place at, anyway. Room service orders are now verified through computers, and an order won't be accepted unless it corresponds to an occupied room whose tenant has left a valid credit card number with the front desk.

Humorous writer Joe Queenan described trying it in one of his pieces it in late nineties. It didn't work, but, then again, people were more trusting in 1972.
