DVD please

As many years as this has been out of print on VHS, isn't it time for it to get a decent DVD release? (After all, why should the bootleggers be making all the money from this?)

reply

its out on dvd - got it a few years ago.

part of a hammer 3 disc set.

Countess Dracula
Twins of Evil
Vampire Circus

About £12 i paid for all 3 - no extra features given the age of the film - only the original trailers.

I'd like to see a region 1 disc come out from Anchor Bay. Been wanting to see this one for years. I bought the other two Karnstein films, and they are great. Now I have to see Twins of Evil.

and you wont be disappointed mate. twins of evil is fantastic. there is 3 scenes too look out for...1)when the twins first arrive on a horse drawn carriage and are leaning out the window, how they never knocked themselves out with those huge jiggling boobs i'll never know. 2) the sex scene between the count and mircalla is hysterical <just look out for the candle and wonder who the actor playing the count pissed off in props> and also rather disturbing, when you consider that not only is mircalla dead...but also his great 'times a million' grandmother. so the count is technically doing necrophillia and incest. go figure! 3) the interaction between the count and his man servant when the angry villagers are on their way too his castle is THE worst bit of acting i've ever seen <and i've seen enough soaps too know bad acting when i see it> this is due mainly too the the fact the man servant cant speak so he has too mime for the count and the count then has too translate for the audience. so just sit back and watch and enjoy a great hammer movie.

At this point in the movie I almost expect the Count to translate : "What's that? There's a boy trapped down the well?"

reply

lol, good point. never thought that the count had the same acting coach as skippy/lassie . i'm just imagining skippy in the bush and lassie in his kennel both saying at same time 'that part should've been MINE' %-)

Has this ever been released in R1?

reply

couldn't say.
best option is too get someone too record it for you from reg.2 too reg.1
thats what i did too get myself a copy of 'kiss of the vampire'.

MGM owns the U.S. rights on this, but has been taken over by Sony who have no interest in releasing these types of films of DVD. Damn shame!

reply

That sucks (ouch)! If you have a region free player (like the amazing Oppo), you can rent it from nicheflix.com .

No, no, no, don't tug on that. You never know what it might be attached to.

Given the shear number of movies sitting around disintergrating and becoming lost forever you might want to concider the "Bootlegger" as sort of a preserver of these films and not the bad guy I picked up a copy of this film on ebay in wide screen that was almost flawless not to mention some other titles that are otherwise forgotten or lost, it allways comes down to the studio bottom line if there isn't a million or so people waiting in line to get the film theres not enough profit in it to be bothered with.
Besides they're to busy remaking old sitcoms and other stuff to be bothered. So in closing I concider the Boot Legger to be a film preservationist rather than the Bad Guy

There is a new Region 2 DVD from Spain by Carlton & Filmax of just TWINS OF EVIL and it purports to have the complete 87 minute version, widescreen 1:85:1/16x9 -- the version on the old 3 DVD box set was 83 minutes and 1:85:1/4x3. A quick search on Google should turn it up in less than four clicks.

The reason the film is unavailable in the US is due to a dispute over distribution rights to the musical score, but there is no reason to make do with a bootleg burn, you can get region free DVD players for about $75 these days. Anyone who takes their Eurohorror seriously should have one.

reply

Haha! I can do one better I'm not sure if they are releasing Twins of Evil but it would be good if they did... I never knew the reason for them not releasing it in the U.S. but now I do.

"Icon Entertainment Intl. has acquired the Hammer film library of more than 100 horror titles for worldwide sale, according to Variety. The distinctive library includes Christopher Lee starrer "Dracula: Prince of Darkness," "The Abominable Snowman," "Frankenstein & the Monster From Hell," "Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter," "Plague of the Zombies" and "Quatermass and the Pit." Icon now reps more than 300 titles for international distribution."

Great cinematography by the great Dick Bush, who created the lighting for many of Ken Russell's films - Delius: Song of Summer; Crimes of Passion; The Lair of the White Worm; Mahler; Savage Messiah; Tommy, William Friedkin's, Sorcerer and the excellent, Blood On Satan's Claw.

There is also the German DVD, which has the same excellent transfer:

QUOTE: "The reason the film is unavailable in the US is due to a dispute over distribution rights to the musical score"

Warner Brothers had no problems using the theme, note for note, from this film for the first two seasons of their animated JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon. (Without giving the composer screen credit.) Number of online sites and a couple of genre magazines have grumbled about that, over the years. So much of the Hammer horror library is now out on Region 1 DVD...would like to see someone finally get on the ball with this one.

Thanks for sharing those screenshots! And the earlier post about bootleggers sometimes being the salvation for films is true; that's how Murnau's NOSFERATU was saved.

Here's a seller's page from Ebay with a Brazillian disc. It's region free, NOT A BOOTLEG. I have it and I also purchased Vampire Circus from the same place.
