which is better?

which film do you like most, "Twins of Evil", or "Witchfinder General"?

reply

Personally I preferred Witchfinder General, are you from the UK, recently BBC1 have shown a lot of old horror films, including these two. The Satanic Rites of Dracula was also shown, another one with Peter Cushing in.
The Wicker Man was on tonight, odd that they've been showing all these old films on tv during these hols.

reply

Strange indeed...
Anyway, didn't see Witchfinder General, but Twins of Evil wasn't too bad. Actually I found it more attractive than Satanic Rites of Dracula. Especially the setting was great in TOE. And Cushing was a whole lot better than his Van Helsing character in the SROD.

aye i recorded them both that night, but i videoed over them >.< like a dumbass, I can't find them anywhere either :(

reply

Bizarrely, since they are very similar films, the BBC showed them overlapping.

Witchfinder is a superior film, certainly rings rather realistic. Twins of Evil is obviously less realistic, but far more fun to watch, (for 2 reasons......).

I am interested in seeing 'Mark of the Devil' a European adaption of the theme, set in Austria and based on 'true' stories.

A note - Twins of Evil is avaliable in a 3 disc set with 2 other later Hammer Horrors (Countess Dracula and Vampire Circus) in the UK. The DVD quality is quite fantastic.
Witchfinder General is also avaliable, although I have not seen it. Although I have heard mention of a 2-disc version, with alternate cuts of the film - not sure where to find this though.

I like "Twins of Evil" better but they are both great.

Aside from the appeal of the barely-legal, identical-twin Playboy Playmates, "Witchfinder General" is probably better of the two because it has the same morally ambiguous tone, but doesn't cop out with the whole good-guy-killing-the-bad-guy-and-everyone-living-happily-ever-after ending. It is more the serious and historically accurate of the two (obviously, since there are no vampires in it). On the other hand, this film is probably a lot more fun to watch.

I'm afraid both films are far better than "Mark of the Devil" though. If you like more serious and historically accurate witch-burning films I'd recommend "The Devils" or the Italian film "Flavia, the Heretic". If you prefer fun, nudity-laden vampire films go with the other two entries into the Carnstein Trilogy, "The Vampire Lovers" and "Lust for a Vampire". I wouldn't waste 90 minutes of your life on "Mark of the Devil" though.

TWINS OF EVIL or WITCHFINDER GENERAL? Boy, tough call to make, as they take a different approach to similar themes. While both films deal with authorities so obsessed with driving evil from their land that they become as dangerous as those they hunt, the vampire element in TWINS makes it play more like a dark fantasy or Gothic fairy tale. WITCHFINDER, on the other hand, is a brutal look at historical events. (Although witch hunter Matthew Hopkins actually died in his bed, from consumption, rather than at the end of an axe.) I know it's all a matter of taste, but I thought MARK OF THE DEVIL was a decent film, as well. The recent reissue of this to DVD by Blue Underground includes a number of excellent extras, including a humorous interview with the film's co-star, Udo Kier. You might also want to have a look at Christopher Lee's witchfinder film, THE BLOODY JUDGE. (Another film inspired by historical events.)

I have never been a fan of Hammer Horror films because I tink they look abit crappy, but me and my friend love Horror films so we decided to watch 'Twins Of Evil' when we saw it was on. And the only thing that kept me watching really was those to girls. They were stunning. Absolutely gorgeous. But as the film went on I realised it wasn't at all bad.

(By the way, the reason so many horror films were on last Xmas is because it was the BBC's "Creepy Christmas").

The look and feel of Hammer films changed over the years, with some being head and shoulders above the other. Yes, when it came to casting lovely ladies, someone at the studio certainly knew what they were doing.

twins of evil was the more 'fun' film. while witch finder general was just THE film too watch if u wanted too be scared sh*tless. i always enjoy watching the scene when the twins arrive in the town in that horse drawn carriage. theyre looking out the window and their boobs are bouncing away so much, im sure theres a directors cut where they knock themselves out and appear with a pair of matching black eyes. also the part where the count is having sex with marcalla and her hand rubs up and down the candle, was hysterical, as we all know, the candle was a metaphore for the penis. considering it was a small candle,,,whom did the actor playing the count piss off in the props department?

reply

TWINS OF EVIL's soundtrack was raided by Warner Brothers for their animated JUSTICE LEAGUE series. The cartoon's main theme is, note for note, the music used for the main and closing credits fo TWINS.

twins of evil, i saw it before witchfinder general and fell in love with it, it was one of my first hammer horror films

Tough call, I haven't watched "Witchfinder General" for quite awhile, but yesterday I saw "Twins of Evil" for the first time.

Maybe, Twins.

reply

play.com or amazon should have copies of this great film. you can get it in a triple box set along with 'countess dracula' and 'vampire circus'.

'Witchfinder General.' Matthew Hopkins is just a bit more of an interesting character than Weill.

I think the moral ambiguity of Uncle Gustov is better played than Price's clearly jaded character. Price is my favorite actor, but, the nod goes to Twins of Evil.

reply

I haven't yet seen WitchFinder General (though I want to), but I really enjoyed Twins of Evil.

I've got both Witchfinder and Twins on Blu-ray. Both are good films for the time they were made, with Twins being the more fun out of the two, but Witchfinder is definitely the better film IMO. Vincent Price plays the part of the woman-hating sadist, Matthew Hopkins, to cruel, cold-hearted perfection. I do love Peter Cushing in Twins as well though.

Witchfinder General, but I like this movie
