The STUPIDEST EFFING MOVIE EVER!!!

I have no clue what the heck this was about it was nasty i dont know why and it was a bore. Whats with the 5min lectures every character has like 5mins of blah blah blah. The commercial with the ladies and stockings was unnessisary. The whole damn movie was unnessisary I wish I could get that hour and a half of my life back.Im old enough to understand(14) but it was downright stupid and I hope noone ever has to see it EVER.

There's a lot of things that I appreciate now that I wouldn't have appreciated when I was 14.

Not having a go at you. Godard gives me the *beep* sometimes too, some of his stuff is fairly pretentious... but I've found that as I've seen more of his movies, I've got to like them more. His films are hard to get into but if you've got patience, he's worth persevering with.

define "pretentious"

reply

I have the exact opposite feeling the more movies i see of his the more i dislike him.

reply

I thought it was rather funny but I totally understand your feelings with the movie. Some of his films are way too much up their own arse to be taken seriously. Even one of his workers in the 60s said of Godard that " In each of his movies there are about 20 minutes of brilliance and the rest where he's frustrating

reply

I agree, some of his films are so inconsistent but just have absolute moments of sheer brilliance--which is maybe why 'merican filmmakers like Tarantino and Wes Anderson have picked the all the meat of the bones of his films. Just look at Hotel Chevalier, has Godard-ish pan and stop and pan when Natalie Portman's character is entering room.

You're not even old enough to spell unnecessary correctly, I doubt you're old enough to understand this film, either artistically or politically. So yeah, no one cares about your opinion. There are far, far worse films.

reply

Oh, please. I agree that this thread is silly and shrill, but if you are old enough to be telling other people they aren't old enough to understand certain things, then you are old enough to know that spelling and grammar skills have absolutely nothing to do with age.

"Im old enough to understand(14)"

LOL! Thanks for the laughs.

This is a terrible movie whether you are 14 0r 60.Godard has done great films(Breathless,Contempt),mediocre films and terrible films. This is one of his worst.Full of people spouting slogans not dialogue.A very silly and naive film.

Godard's pretentiousness is a means to an end, and if you read anything about film theory then you might begin to have an understanding of why this film came about and why it is the way it is. This film isn't meant to be comfortable viewing, it is meant to create questions in you as the viewer, not deliver comfortable escapism.

I have to say, I didn't relish Godard's work until I read up on him some more, but now I love his work. I love more the fact that he tries to challenge his audience. It's down to you as a viewer whether you take on the challenge or not. If you want to, I suggest you read up about the theories of Bertolt Brecht and his impact on cinema and maybe even brush up on some Marxism while you're at it. If once you've read them and you're still giving us your teenage rant, then European New Wave clearly isn't for you and you should probably stick to your Tarantino films and comic-book adaptations (dont get me wrong, I love both of these) until you're a bit older or at least a bit more educated (no disrespect). When you're ready you will understand, even if only on an appreciative level, why Godard does what he does. I would also suggest you check out something slightly less political by Godard, like 'Le Mepris' (Contempt), which will give you a nice entry into his world.

Have fun! xxxx

PS - Not trying to be condescending, I know you feel like you know everything at 14, but trust me, the only I've learnt as I've gotten older is that I know nothing. I had exactly the same reaction to 'Bout de Souffle' at around your age, now I love it. xx

"It is meant to create questions in you as a viewer".

It is not enough to put forth sociopolitical polemic to be a great filmmaker, you also have to have a way of making it work as a work of visual art. And for all the cinematic quality or ingenuity found in this bit, Godard might as well have written a two-page pamphlet and dropped it on the street corners.

I can't jump on you for slaggin this. It's for Godard completists only( I'm one).
Watching it was like doing homework. I totally dug the bit with the ladies and the
pantyhose. The highlight of the film. I gotta have that song on mp3.

reply

I didn't like this movie at all, I thought it was really pretentious and the situation unmoving but seriously, 14 isn't an age where you would understand it =) You won't be looking for the right social, political or even just film-maker's elements. It's not an insult - I was calling myself a film buff at 14 and looking back I didn't know anything - still don't know much but do know enough to consider the hour and a half wasted all right =p

reply

Oh and that being said, I'd hardly call this the STUPIDEST EFFING MOVIE EVER, or even remotely close.

reply

Well see I quite enjoyed it. But I can certainly see that after films like 'Weekend' and 'Masculin/Feminin', 'Tout Va Bien' was kind of a dissapointment but there were moments I liked...

Jacques intimate speech to the camera about how he and Suzanne fell in love during the May '68 riots and how he had to compomise his filmmaking for commercials to pay bills for example. It was a nice moment.

Mostly though yeah, any of the other Godard films mentioned were more interesting but all his films are as important as the last. Godard's commentary on French society and culture was so apt, he had to comment on the events of May '68 and how they changed France.

If your truly interested in film, please learn something about it first before you slate one of the most important directors in it's history.

If a 14 year old sees a movie he has the right not to like it and to express that opinion on a forum of which he is a member just like the rest of us. He may be wrong - if there is such a thing as right or wrong in things concerning art - but he's honest. If anything, he should be applauded for at least making the effort to watch a movie like this.
