Brilliant

This film is totally brilliant. There were times I had to look away because it was so emotionally evocative. I haven't seen a film of this quality for years. All the elements worked--casting was spot-on. The photography was perfect, not "artsy." I'm not a fan of the Martin Scorsese face-blow-up-close-up, but these close-ups were just as a another person would look in another's face to decipher the emotions. It had to be in black and white--color would melo-dramatize the story. How sad to have missed this movie since 1982.

Most of the films I watch are in black and white anyway, so I didn't even notice it at first....I was thinking filming it in color would have been a mistake as well.
