Missed the last few minutes...

Please, would someone tell me what happened after the brothers came to get the little boy? I missed all of the part after one of them grabbed the little boy as he was trying to climb over the fence. Thank you.

(SPOILERS) The Thorpe clan (Sarah’s kin) takes the weeping boy. It was explained that the boy’s biological father had legally given them the right to do this. Fentry (Duvall) fights them physically at first, but then becomes resigned to the tragic outcome. He says he always feared they might come for the boy, but had hoped they wouldn’t.
Later the film switches to the courthouse, where the story began. It turns out that the young man shot at the start of the movie was in fact the boy Fentry initially raised. Apparently, after being raised by the Thorpes, he had turned into a hooligan. We have to believe that the boy’s life would have been so much different had he stayed with Fentry.
Fentry, as a juror, cannot bring himself to vote “not guilty” for the man who shot the boy. The trial ends in a hung jury. As the film’s narrator (the attorney) watches Fentry drive off, he talks about his enduring love.
This description cannot convey the emotional impact of the film, but those are basically the details.

It appears you propably watched this film on cable. In case you might want to watch it again, it will replay on TCM on Friday, July 18 at 12.15 AM following a very good Sidney Lumet film, which also takes place in the Mississippi River: The Fugitive Kind, w/ M. Brando, Anna Magnani & Joanne Woodward.
