The Shark Scene

One of the best moments in the history of cinema.

I believe this scene used to be cut when this film was shown on a 90 minute commercial television time slot. Honestly, this film can do without that scene. I just love at the end of the film when the heroine sings "The White Cliffs of Dover" to Baby John. It's just so fitting! Pretty cool film!

I just saw this one for the first time, and I really liked it (even CONSIDERING my bias when it comes to early ' 70s horror films). It reminds me of an episode of "Tales From The Darkside" much later, with Alice Ghostley and a character actor whose name I can never think of, except that in that story, it was the cannibals themselves who had the happy ending! I agree about the shark scene. Regardless of how people feel about sharks, that should've been an alarm bell for the girl!

reply

Well the first alarm bell should have gone off when she got a letter in the mail urging her to rush off alone to a remote mansion without telling anybody where she was going. I think Regina's alarm was disconnected.

Why did Linda Gillen's character stick around after observing Baby John's sick killing of the shark? Makes no sense! I know, it's a movie.

reply

Well, I think the scenes before and after rate just as well. The first-time-they-kissed, by itself, is one of the sweetest (for want of a better word) love scene I have seen - and I am not a mushy type. After baby John leaves, Regina's attempt to bury the wreckage is another very tender and poignant moment.

For the life of me, after scenes like this, I don't know why Linda Gillen did not get better recognition of her talent. Maybe she went on to do work on stage. The few other movies I have seen her in, she always came across as a little sweetheart. Cute as a button in this flick and lots of talent to boot - a refreshing change from the silicone bimbos of today.

I wish there was some biographical data on her.

LOL This scene made my life what it is today. I almost cry whenever I watch it. It's so sick, but his freak-out is so hilarious.

reply

It's a very silly scene, but it has a poignant side to it. Poor Baby John has feelings for Regina that he can't understand. He feels loyal to his parents, but he wants to protect her. So he takes his anger at them out on the shark -- and the shark is a flesh-devouring predator just like his parents!

Yeah, I bet the shark "LOL'd" as well while getting brutally killed for this lame-ass film.
Maybe we could smash your little head on a rock and see if you still find it hilarious? Or "poignant", like the mentally handicapped guy who replied to your post.

Yeah, I bet the shark would feel the same if it would jump you in the open waters ... "oh, no, i shouldn't kill this one, it's animal cruelty" ...

reply

You haven't seen much cinema then.

Unless, of course, you simply find animal cruelty amusing or crafted, in that case you just have horrid taste.
