Why savagely kill the small shark?

Why would John Boy savagely kill the small shark? It's a painful scene to watch and the viewer can feel what Regina is feeling, which compels her to bury the shark in tears.

I suppose it was to show that Baby John was paddling with only one oar in the water but, if so, Regina should have flown the coop while the gettin was good.

Because sharks eat people. So, I think Baby John saw the shark as competition.

Because he was a nutcase like his parents. It's that simple. No need to overthink it, this is just a stupid movie. The only one I felt bad for was the shark.

I was shocked when I saw that. The only on screen death involved an actual animal killed. Meanwhile all of the deaths involving the girls were off screen. What the hell kind of sick priority is that?

I agree with you, "sick" is the right word. Especially given that the shark was killed for real.
