Farcoat,
Here is a bit of trivia.....Joan Collins had an arguement with the actor, portraying her screen husband, right before that murder scene was filmed!!!
They were arguing about Ms. Collin's acting abilities!!!

Because he's a sweet old man. Or because he's Peter Cushing.

Or because he lost his wife in real life the year before, which makes it all that much more tragic.

I agree, I find it quite emotional when he starts reading the cards and then begins to realise what their messages are really intended to convey

Yes, it's sad how people can be so cruel to a man who they don't even know. Especially when that man is so kind to everyone around him, extremely lonely, and would never harm a soul. I've seen this film dozens of times and that story never loses it's impact. I still feel just as sorry for Mr. Grimsdyke as I did the first time I watched it. Such a great story and Peter Cushing gave probably the best performance of his career.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

I agree. I really didn't get why everybody hated him so much. Sometimes I fear like I may end up just like that character (since I'm 28 and never even had a girlfriend/wife).

I haven't watched this film in nearly ten years, but I remember how horrible the card reading scene made me feel. It probably didn't help that my grandfather hadn't long passed away, and the thought of such scum tormenting a poor old man made me feel awful.

An excellent performance from Peter Cushing.

I can watch it OK. I can imagine this kind of hate happening in real life. I have seen lesser instances where families can be cruel and unjust to lonely old men.

reply

I almost cried when he read the cards and when they found his body.
