any copies surviving?

Have read so much about this xmas special, but have never seen it. I was only 8 at the time so obviously i wouldnt remember it. I have read in various books, that all copies of the videotape were wiped by the BBC during the 70's...is this true? Are there any copies of The Stone Tape left? And was it as scary as many books suggest? Story sounds similar to the BBC's "GhostWatch" (92).
I know Nigel Kneale was a fine writer of scary stuff, would love to see the Stone Tape again.

You don;t have to go to private sellers. I got a copy from Amazon.co.uk in a Region 0 format. If you have a Region free player, (Daewoo $47.00) you can get a brand new Stone Tape DVD for 19.00 US

Although, the thought of the effort it will take to transfer all those VHS's onto disc :(

If you have WinAmp on your computer, a station called "TV Gold" Plays it ocassionally. They play classic British TV and Movies. In fact, I'm watching it as I type this. May 30, 9:03pm EST.

Good luck. You can also try www.tvgold.org Their site is down for improvement as of this time, but I'm sure it will be up soon.

Hope this helps. If you want to contact me, you can email me at [email protected]

It might be my fault that it used to be believed to be missing. In the late 80s/early 90s I used to work for the BBC archives. I took a call from someone (probably from BBC Video) asking for the tape number for "The Stone Tapes" (note plural). Did a search, and nothing came up, which indicated it was gone from the archives. Now, if the person in question had got the title right and asked for "The Stone Tape" singular, I'd have found it.

Which goes to show that accuracy is important.

Thats a great story!!! Brilliant!! Thank goodness it's now available. I was not born untill 1976, so I missed out on all the classic sc-fi and ghost stories the first time round.

But I am making up for it now!!!

thanks for the tips and stories. I have downloaded from youtube though it its a pain being in just 10 minute chunks. I live in Brunei, so access to internet and Amazon can be patchy.I actually enjoyed the Stone Tape, I am a fan of Nigel Kneale, good writer, intelligent, so rare these days. Had to laugh at the scenes with Reginald Marsh, clearly the guy was absolutely pissed out of his brain!! amazed he made it to the right studio! The stroy was quite creepy and there werte indeed similarities to Quatermass and the Pit, which is fine with me! Oh, check out The Signalman, fantastic performances, very creepy. cheers all.
