Emil du Bois-Reymond and "Solaris"

Things I noticed about "Solaris" in the course of researching the life of Emil du Bois-Reymond.

Stanislaw Lem's novel drew heavily from "The Limits of Science," an address delivered by Emil du Bois-Reymond in 1872. The same holds for Tarkovsky's film a century. To wit:

1. The planet Solaris is a Laplacean Mind, as du Bois-Reymond called it. Since Solaris knows everything about the natural world, it can also read our minds, which it does. Du Bois-Reymond discussed this idea explicitly.

2. Du Bois-Reymond's theme of duplicate persons appears in both the novel and the film.

3. The theme of consciousness as a limit of scientific inquiry appears in both the novel and the film.

4. "Solaris" appeared on the centennial of du Bois-Reymond's address. (This should appeal to conspiracy theorists.)

I can supply references to all this in case anyone wants them.
