Why aren't you allowed to dislike 'outside the mainstream' films?

I watched this film and found it boring, I came on here and surprise surprise there are imperious reviews about people finding it boring just "not getting it". Or- perhaps they just found it boring and even if they did understand the plot would still find it boring?

reply

Go to any board and call the film boring, and you are guaranteed to get people defending it because they think you have just attacked it. It's nothing special about 'outside the mainstream' films.

Yeah, you're free to have whatever opinion you want. On the other hand, other people are free to disagree with your opinion. That's the way of the world, man.

reply

Of course people are allowed to disagree, but I hate the "if you don't like this you must be a stupid" attitude that goes with disliking these kinds of film. And being told to go and watch Twilight or something.

reply

I'm afraid I'm with you, somebodyls: I don't mind slow pacing and there are plenty of non-mainstream films I like, but "Solaris" left me cold.

I saw a good-condition print at The Nuart Theater in Los Angeles back in 1990. I was 25 at the time and already a lover of cinema. It bored me. Eventually, I read the novel it was based on and saw the Soderbergh version. I liked both of those a great deal.

I guess I just have no affinity for Tarkovskiy's vision. This is still the only film of his I have seen, though I have "Stalker" on my "to watch" list.

I may re-watch "Solaris" at some point, but am in no hurry.

All Art is pretense.

reply

My thoughts exactly. I was 21 when I first tried to view Solaris, and mind you I took film seriously. I view it as art, and even as a teen I watched films intently despite how slow or tedious they were. Foreign films, silent films, art house films, what have you, I watched it all and loved it. Solaris broke me. I just found it unbearable. I'm in possession of a copy right now, and I'm 13 minutes in, and already I'm feeling like it's a chore as opposed to an enlightening, intellectually stimulating piece. Being smart and fascinating on deeper levels does not have to equate to being difficult to watch. I'm just not sure if I can hack this film, or regard it as the masterpiece it is hailed as, and that hurts me because I want to walk away with a deeper respect for Tarkovsky and this art form. But, I'm not going to claim I like something if I truly do not. I'm going to watch it in its entirety, but I'm afraid this film is lost on me.

Mexico- God's blind spot.

@Injectionlethal

I get that---I liked the film when I saw it over a decade ago (still haven't seen the remake) but yeah, the first 20 or so minutes are boring as hell---my suggestion to any one seeing it for the first time is to skip that first 20 minutes, and then that's when the film gets interesting. I loved the last shot of the film too---it was very emotional and touching (to me,anyway.)

reply

If you´re gonna skip the first 20 minutes of the film, or really any part of it, you might as well not watch it all. They´re absolutely crucial to setting up the character of Kelvin as well as grounding the film emotionally.

Apparently, a lot of folks miss that the "slowness" i.e. the pacing of a movie is no less important to its artistic success than what´s usually referred to as "substance".

You whine too much. Instead of gossiping about other posters, you might as well actually talk about the film and, for starters, explain what, exactly, is it that you don´t understand about it. And skip the "it´s boring" part - it´s boring.

I was just making an observation. Stop whining about my whining.

reply

Because it is not cool to dislike them. Liking new films and not liking old will be considered a treason by old moviegoers because imagine this you have different taste than them, how dare you.

reply

I agree and disagree with you regarding whether it is boring or not. Films such as this one I have to be in a certain mood to watch otherwise I won't enjoy them. I thoroughly enjoyed Solaris however my Hollywood trained short attention span can at times cause me to become bored watching it and other films that have slower pacing as opposed to the fast paced mainstream films.

reply

I don't think it's to do with being Hollywood trained, I don't particularly enjoy action films, I prefer dramas. Watching paint dry springs to mind :/ you can find a film boring without it being because you have a short attention span.

reply

I thought the dialogue in this film was very thought-provoking. Especially Staut's soliloquy on the hopelessness of finding extraterrestrial intelligence.

The cinematography was dreadful, though. Too many "indulgent" and "artsy" shots. Maybe it's just the age of the film showing. Mind you, "2001" wasn't too different.

The 5 minutes or so of the shuttle boarding the space station was probably one of the most indulgent movie moments I have ever seen.

its the need to feel special and unique - the likers will love a film simply because its obscure has some cult director or currently in vogue star. They want to feel superior so will try to belittle anyone who doesnt like their thing

IMHO the following films will bring up a knee-jerk reaction if you dare to say they aint that good

Psycho - i think its dated and overrated

Audition - Asian horror which is bad but Takeshi Miike is considered cool so the film is a ascred cow

A Tale Of Two Sisters - another Asian horror which has somehow joined the sacred cow league

Primer - indie sci-fi flick about time travel which is just a bit too confusing

Mulholland Drive - possibly the most overrated and vehemently defended film of all time - Just go onto a board and say you didnt like the film and you will have swarms of David Lynch fans try to belittle you by saying you are too stupid to get it - Even when you present facts they still say it! I recall stating that Lynch has openly admitted to making films that only please himself and basically that the plots are made up with no concern if they make sense

"The need to feel special and unique".

Solaris`s IMDb rating, cast by a total of 37 000 voters, is 8,1/10. Digging it hardly makes you unique.

"Because it`s obscure".

It`s anything but as it`s constantly featured on various all time great lists. Especially ones preoccupied with sci-fi.

"Has some cult director".

Tarkovsky is no "cult director" but rather largely considered one of the greatest film artists in history.

"Currently in vogue star".

So... Donatas Banionis and Jüri Järvet were some kind of superstars at the time this film was made? Doesn`t really check out with the information I possess...

"Swarms of David Lynch fans try to belittle you".

I visit the MD board regularly (admit it - something you haven`t done once) and can inform you that you rarely find as tolerant and civil fans as you do there - or on Lynch`s boards in general. But, of course, thanks to your desperate, pathological inferiority complex, the need to see yourself as this tragic yet heroic victim, objective observation is not something to be tolerated.

"I recall stating that Lynch has openly admitted to making films that only please himself".

What bloody difference does it make if YOU have stated that - unless you`re pointing out it is therefore not to be taken seriously? And, of course, it`s a lie as Lynch has never said such a thing.

"Tarkovsky is no "cult director" but rather largely considered one of the greatest film artists in history."

He's considered that only by devoted cineaste and critics. If you bring him up to most people they either wont know who you're talking about or they'll say they've heard OF him, but have never actually seen his work. This makes him a cult-directer.

Almost never the case. More often than not, it's the case where someone who is in the minority on disliking a film will try and come up with stupid excuses like "everyone else just wants to feel superior", despite ZERO evidence. All that does is make you look incredibly childish, and make people wonder if your lack of maturity might've contributed to disliking the film in question.
