(Speaking of which - HOW do they find out? The girl finds the lipstick on the mirror, but we never see her or anyone else making an announcement - and why would they?!)
Anyway, the calmness... Unrealistic, or were people really that relaxed about bombs on planes, in the 70's??!

The pilot does make an announcement in the movie. We don't hear everything he says because there's a gap when they focus on the outside of the plane but then he continues with something like, 'again, this is probably a hoax...'
I've heard in those days when hijacking planes was fairly common, the hijacker just wanted the plane to go to another destination or wanted something. Their goal wasn't necessarily to kill themselves so it was unlikely they'd want to blow the whole plane up while they're on it. The pilots were instructed to just redirect the plane and the passengers probably expected nothing would happen.
It still doesn't explain why they seem so calm but as compared to how people might react these days back then it was, I hate to say it because it's not really the right word but, routine (?) I was reading about 911 and learned that at first they thought it was a hijack situation so they complied. That was 2001, years after this movie was made.
To everyone's surprise, the fools fly directly into a building. Even then they probably thought it was an accident then the second plane went into the second building and I think they knew something else was going on. The passengers on the third plane, which was delayed, found out about the first two doomed flights from calls made to their families (probably to let them know they'd be delayed). Once they learned what happened they knew they had to fight back to try to survive.

Or was it shot down to prevent a larger loss of life in a populated area
