'I'm a witch...'

Does anyone else here think this movie is very underrated? It's one of Romero's best films, at least in terms of story and character. I dig the montage in the witchcraft store set to Donovan's "Season of the Witch" and I LOVE the scene at the end when Jan White announces "I'm a witch". I noticed there is a listing on IMDb for Season of the Witch 2008. I hope Romero is directing this, as he has often said this film is the only one he would like to remake. I think a remake could be very good, and perhaps even surpass the original, which certainly isn't perfect. What do you all think?

I agree, underrated. The acting is mixed, and the film is pretty grainy, but there is a lot to appreciate in this movie. It really held my attention.

The surreal beginning reminded me of the opening sequence in David Cronenberg's Shivers, the tour of the super-modern condominium building. It worked well and set the tone. I also liked the repeating imagery of clocks and mirrors.

The pacing is in my opinion pretty terrific. Romero takes all the time he needs to show everything that he wants to. He doesn't rush anything. I think that was the right way to do things. It does seem to run on, but to me that makes a lot of the movie feel very natural. Its very believable.

Everything that happens is very subtle. Nothing makes a big splash, except the ending, which I loved! Its also got a pretty great feminist message, akin to Ginger Snaps.

I agree! Great movie. I forgot I posted this thread, haha. I don't know if they are still planning to remake this, but I wouldn't be opposed to it despite my aversion to remakes -- but only if Romero directs.

The opening of Season of the Witch reminds me of a similar dream sequence in Bunuel's Belle De Jour... I think Romero was definitely inspired by that film.

Well, it's no Simon, King of the Witches, but it is a much better film than it is given credit for. I miss these kind of DIY movies from the 60's/70's that are often better than the big budget turds made today. ;-)

I love it.

I have this on VHS but I haven’t seen it in a while. Isn’t it about a bored housewife who dabbles in witchcraft but not really a horror film?

Yes. It’s on Amazon now.
