Does anyone know what happened to Scott Anthony?

No IMDB listings since 1974?

Yes, strange isn't it, and such a fine performance.

I wish someone could answer this question. Scott Anthony's performance was brilliant in Savage Messiah. It seemed as though he would have an incredible career ahead of him. Someone have Ken Russell around to their home for tea and biccies and ask him, he must know!

I would also like to know. I went to each of Scott's 3 feature films when they were released (could I be the only member of that club?): I saw Dead Cert in London while visiting there in 1974, and that one was never released back home here in America. My guess is that, analogous to many, many other actors & actresses who I have liked over the years, he didn't catch on with audiences immediately so was dropped by the powers that be (studios, indie producers, casting agents, packagers -you name it). All three of these films, which I obviously greatly enjoyed, were total flops. That's all they care about, and who are we fans to quibble with the bean counters??

I was doing a short list recently of American actors from this period (end '60s/beg. '70s) who met a similar fate: Jordan Christopher, Christopher Jones, Zalman King and Barry Newman. All were promising, but none of them remained leading men for long and flops were the reason. In this group Barry Newman had a bona fide hit "Vanishing Point" (all time favorite for me), but since his participation was not what made that film great I guess he couldn't ride its gravy train for long.

Going way, way back, there were many "B" actresses I became infatuated with who did not get the cult treatment of their more famous sisters: Juli Reding, Joanna Frank and more recently Lisa Toothman all got me hot and bothered but disappeared very rapidly.

I get the impression that Scott did not have another aspect of showbiz, e.g., tv, stage, to fall back on. I remember Ken Russell's remark that he cast him in Savage Messiah because Scott had carpenter type skills (Harrison Ford anyone -he could have also been a no-shot without a lucky break) and he was looking foremost for the physical aspects of the sculptor performance, more important to Ken than getting a great Actor for the role. I know that years earlier Ken had cast Jeanne Moreau in the lead for a version of this project that never got made, but I can't remember who the male lead was -John McEnery sticks in my mind but don't quote me! Maybe Peter McEnery!

You're only as good as your last picture.

That's a good post, Lor; it's interesting.
I had no idea about Jeanne Moreau being cast in this.

And, needless to say, I would also like to know what happened to Scott Antony.

Scott Anthony took over the lead role in "Pippin" on Broadway in the late '70s. That was the last time I saw him in anything.

In the later 1970's Scott was involved in corporate videos partnering a company involved in the production. He Directed an arts centre in Gloucester City which was argueably almost a cultural desert before his arts trust developed.
he innovated arts initatives such as arts cabaret in Gloucester park , outreach arts workers to work within communities and community organisations, a whole variety of arts based workshops one of which produced a short film in which he featured, a playwagon which took inflatable large tools/castles around playschemes and live events, etc. this dynamic organisation featured as part of the gloucester tourism strategy and was in an episode of then popular ITV programme Stars on Sunday.

At a Q&A with Savage Messiah at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival, Ken Russell, in answer to the same question, also said Anthony had just disappeared.

He and Dorothy Turin both give great performances in this film. He was extremely cute, too. It’s a shame he left acting behind so quickly, but good to know that he’s still around - he turns 70 today (29/6/20) and according to the Facebook link posted above (long ago), he does check his FB page.
