who the heck was Judith Paris supposed to be???

Her character has an apparent relationship with Thomas Buff (who he?) she identifies herself as a write of several books who "Tom" has printed for me. Evidently her style and look is so familiar that the characters at the dinner scene don't blatently identify each other. except by first names. So who's who??
