This film deserves a lot more recognition! The first time I sew it, I was amazed by the story, amazed by the colorful characters-that such as Gaudier-his story is so unique and special. Scott antony does a fantastic job in bringing to the big screen Gaudier's joy of living...The greatness of this movie lies in describing Sophey &Henri relationship-the penniless painter with joy of living, one can never explain, with the much older yet sophisticated polish writer- Sophie Brzeska-Dame Dorothy Tutin, who also display an heart-moving performance of Sophie.
This movie is full of great moments such as the scene in the cemetery, the unforgettable scene where Gaudier sculpting all night long ,the railway scene and especially the way Scott says "Mamalushka" :-)and many more moments which just making you hypnotized by the beauty of this movie.

A truly underrated classic by a truly great (and underrated ) director-Ken Russell.

I read that Ken was inspired a lot from Gaudier when he first read the book "savage messiah"-that is also right for me-I never seen such happiness lies in one character- Gaudier never had a lot of money but he had such a joy of living,he never let the money stop him, nor anything...I just love this movie.

This is a fascinating, overlooked gem, and I'm grateful for the archive release (as well as my local library, where I found it). It's not one of Ken Russell's stronger films, but it's well worth seeking out. 7/10 stars from me.
