This film gets a bad rap for no good reason.

Yeah, it's not really a "Jimi Hendrix film" and it's kind of rambling and "unprofessional," but it conveys a vibe and takes the viewer someplace. You seldom see modern rock performers putting themselves out there the way Jimi did with this film. I mean, you not only get to see Jimi performing in Maui, but you get to watch him do a stoned, rambling improv in what looks like an unfinished basement. There's very little facade with Hendrix, even though he's a guy who dressed like...well, like Jimi Hendrix and you know...acted like...er...Jimi Hendrix.

Personally, I like the film a lot. It's one of my favorite "Midnight Movie" movies. I love it when a filmmaker has some kind of thing they want to express and have the fearlessness to express it, even if it seems goofy to others. "In a world..." where SO many films are about how attractive young people with lots of product in their highlighted hair spend 90 minutes posing for the camera while we all learn something about ourselves...well, dudes smuggling hash (or "pollen" or whatever that's supposed to be) in a surfboard and talking about the cosmic awareness of the universe with Jimi Hendrix seems like a better option to me. Your mileage may vary.

According to a 40 year remembrance article about Rainbow Bridge, the hash pollen in the surfboard was actually cake mix :D

HA!

It actually looks like cake mix now that you mention it! Heh...

It's of a similar style and vintage to the also excellent movie "Gimme Shelter".
