Good story, poor direction

George C Scott was a great actor, but a poor director. The use of slow motion throughout was silly, and took you out of the film. Also, poor script decisions, like killing the cat, again distances you from the main character. I think towards the end of his life, GCS's ego took over and frankly, ruined this career.

I agree the direction wasn't great. Dated now. But the cat was classic.
