I don't get it...

Did the guy in the bath actually have "red bath salts" and walked out early? Then ended up on the beach with a hunting rifle?

Or was it yet another coincidence that the professor had the same name as the killer and actually died?

He's identified as the same guy after being flattened to a pancake by the jeep. Apparently he HAD faked his bathtub death and was just holding his breath while being looked over by the writer.
