Car collisions, like farts, need context to be funny

What's with all the random car crashes at the beginning? It feels so desperate. I love slapstick, but simply ramming cars together isn't funny. There needs to be some kind of context. Ebert said this of fart jokes and other rudeness, and it applies here. They can be funny, but not on their own.

It didn't work for me, either. I guess I laughed at it a little but it really didn't amount to much and it was out of place with the tongue in cheek approach the film uses. Kinda lame.
