unbearably tedious

Reams of banal, useless dialogue, that I suppose is intended to represent some of the grinding environment that drives Tuesday Weld mad. Unfortunately, it has the same effect on viewers. Some of the shots about the viciousness of Hollywood are spot on, but most are just more backdrop for self-absorbed maundering. Tuesday Weld is so beautiful, simply watching her, can carry one through most of the horrible scenes, but otherwise, leave this turkey alone.

You don't know what you're talking about. Just go back to watching mindless Hollywood crap...

The film has no momentum and the characters mope around. The fractured film style is more annoying than revealing. Most of the reviews at the time blamed the film's failure on the difficulty of translating Didion's novel to film.

Different reading for me.I find the dialogue rich. This is as someone else notes a European style film. It is profoundly under appreciated. Soemtime read what Ms. Weld says about her role.

i really identified with Maria during the scene in Vegas when she's on the bed talking to Benny on the tele trying to remember details of a Christmas past. Also when knocking on the trailer door of the man who used to 'work the pit' with Benny. Sometimes it's the damndest thing trying to forget about the past.

It is basically an excuse to watch Tuesday Weld for 2 hours, which is pretty interesting in itself.
