funniest movie ever
this is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen, with mountains of quotable lines (my favorite being "i was no where near oakland") this is a great, great movie

I agree with you, this is by far Woody Allens funniest movie. Bananas was funny, and reconstructing Harry was also very funny, but this is by far the best of his comedy movies.
I especially like the scene right after his wife dumped him, where he has this vision of his wife driving on the back of a motorcycle with a tall blond man, and he cries out: "We'we been divorced two weeks and shes dating a Nazi".
Or when he is trying to impress the date who comes over by the remark: " I like the rain, it washes memories of the sidewalk of life" why don't they write comedy like that anymore.
So many more great moments in this movie....
If i'm not back in one hour, sublet my appartment.

It's a toss up for me between this and Sleeper for WA's funniest film. I especially loved the pathetic attempts at dating which I have modelled my life on.

I agree. This Allen comedy is simply hysterically funny.

I think Herbert Ross was free to direct a better, funnier movie by not being so tied to the words and the original play. The pacing and rhythm of the film is darn near perfect, something that Woody Allen's own directing sometimes misses unless he resorts to cross-cutting (and I am a big Woody Allen fan).

the "i was nowhere near oakland" line was said while they were watching the news, diane keaton says have you heard about the rapes occurring near oakland and allen from across the room screams, "i was nowhere near oakland", the way he said it was hilarious

shareTo actually try and pick out my favorite scene would be near impossible. The part where Allen says, "I'd really have to like her alot.", or when he says ,"I was no where near oakland!"(my sister and I are constantly quoting this one randomly), or when he says, "Needed tossing anyhow." Doesn't matter what, this is one of the funniest, if not the, of all time. This is what made me fall in love with Woody Allen. I am constantly watching and re-watching this movie.
sharei think my two favorite parts were the speech the girl at the museum went off on talking about emptiness in the universe, and when allan and dick are portrayed as sophisticated sitting at a table smoking out of pipes and stuff.

One of my favorite all-time scenes is when Diane Keaton arrives before Woody's blind date and he is setting out his medals from Jr high track! Then when his date arrives and he can't even speak! The turntable incident! This is classic humor, I'm getting my VHS copy out now!!!
shareThe best thing about the film (besides the Woody/Diane chemistry of course)....the West Coast setting. It was apparently due to a strike in NYC that the film was moved to San Francisco.
shareMy favorite line comes when Diane's character is setting up a blind date for Woody's character...she's on the phone with the woman, scheduling a dinner for later that day...when she's telling the woman how to dress for the date, she says, "Simple dress is okay...flats are fine."
Woody gets irritated with her and says, "Tell her to wear heels! What am I, Toulouse-Lautrec?!"
I agree with all of the above. The lines from this just make me laugh and laugh just thinking of it. I can't sepearte Love and Death, this one and Annie Hall for funny lines though. Love them all. Read Woody's books too. Some of his stories are as funny as his films. Genius.

I totally agree- it feels much more relaxed than it would have felt had Woody directed it. Don't get me wrong, I love Woody's directing, but I think this film suited this style more than Woody's.

I saw Play it Again Sam yesterday for the first time and I must say I absolutely loved it. It's definitely the funniest Allen film I've seen so far, with Sleeper in second place.
The scene with the hair dryer had me on the floor laughing. And that bit where he calls a Chinese guy by mistake. loool There are too many classic moments to name them all. Who cares if Woody didn't direct it, I don't think it would have made much difference, and anyway, I suspect Allen and Ross worked closely together on the film.
