Dated

I really like this movie, my fave of Woody's along with Take The Money, but the gag that powers it is dated. And that's Dick giving multiple phone no.s because he's constantly at different addresses. Cell phones have made this gag ancient. "If you need me I'll be at Frozen Tundra 6".

reply

think about how dated todays movies will look in 30 years with our use of cell phones and the internet, our grandkids will be like "what..? just use your brain chips to communicate.....or better yet just teleport over...internet? hahahah!"

reply

Actually, I think the "I'll be at Frozen Tundra 6-5209" is funnier than ever.

Ironically, now that everyone has cell phones, we're -all- behave like Dick. We just text.

The point is that Dick is always o the phone and never in the moment. More relevant than ever.

reply

Yes, that's what I thought, "mail," when I watched it recently. Of course these days, Dick wouldn't have to be telling everyone what land-line phone number he could be reached at; but that always being on the phone certainly is mirrored in the people who virtually have their cell phones permanently grafted onto their ears. (And I'm sure all those calls are just SO interesting and vital.)

reply

The point is that Dick is always o the phone and never in the moment. More relevant than ever.
That exactly what I thought! A promise of things to come!

reply

The Frozen Tundra 6 is a great line, that's why I posted it. And the bit about falling in love with an Eskimo that lead to the tag - Great. In regards to my OP, I still think it's lost it's sheen because the reason he was on the phone so much was to tell people what number he could be reached at.

reply

The funniest thing is he rarely gets phone calls to the numbers he leaves. Has anybody analyzed where he gets the phone calls that he does get? I'm betting they are at his home phone more often than not.

When watching old movies half the beauty is seeing and saying, "Way back when...".

I like the really old films, but I do not like movies from the 80's and early 90's. Those outfits and hairstyles make me cringe...big hair, yuck, big shoulders, yuck!

reply

That's like saying "Gone With the Wind" is dated because people no longer have slaves.

reply

Dated, huh? If you're incapable of displacing yourself from today and immersing yourself in the time an older movie was made you should stop watching older movies. Also, that incapability is a big symptom that you're a complete IDIOT.

reply

You're a complete IDIOT for that remark. It's just an observation. *beep* off IDIOT!

reply

F--k your "observation"... and while we're on the subject, f--k you, dimwit.

I'm laughing at your technical grammar while swearing like an inbred redneck. I can picture you hurling your stupid insults in a bow tie with hands cupped like a choirboy lol. You're a dumba$$

reply

Nothing wrong with my grammar, dolt, and you're the hump that started the swearing match, as evidenced by the fact that you were clearly censored. Your thread is a joke, as are you and those who wrong-headedly opted to raise you. I mean, really, what kind of dung-pile would start an IMDB thread about a series of pay phone gags from an old movie being "dated"? You're a complete and utter waste of flesh and oxygen.

reply

I see you edited that post. You clearly had to go to great lengths to get it just right and appear fully retarded. But then, you're no doubt a natural. For someone to go fully berko over an opinion of a comedy gag that you don't like, shows you clearly aren't dealing with a full deck. I'll take liberty with a Jerry Lacy line : "You know kid, somewhere's in life you got turned around". And you haven't ended up in a good place.

I guess it's good that you're allowed to interact with normal humans on a computer. In the old days they would have had you weaving baskets. But like the phone gag - that's dated :)

Good luck mate. Give my regards to Hinkley...

reply

Wow. You're just so, so stupid.

reply

Wow great comeback

reply

It's all you're worth, dullard

reply

Is this Mark David Chapman posting under a pseudonym? sicko... yeah?

reply

Just stop. You've lost. You'd be wise to delete this thread as it's irrefutable evidence that you're a very dumb yet unjustifiably self-worshiping know-nothing. I thought your initial post was ridiculous, but everything you've posted since has been far worse. Way to be equal parts idiotic AND detestable.

reply

You're perfectly named.

reply

Your handle suits you as well, although "Beatle" should be omitted. You're so close.

reply

Gee, I've lost? I didn't know this was a match. And what an impartial referee declared the verdict.

Sicko, I'm not surprised you want me to delete this thread. It shows you starting this whole thing with an insult over an opinion you don't like. It shows what a fool you are. Fools can't offer a differing view without resorting to a personal verbal whack. Your ego just can't bring you to delete your comments. And like any self righteous egomaniac, you believe I should just accept your insult because it's coming from the one and only you, and you're offended that I've dared throw it right back. Cop it sweet.

reply

No-no, I don't want you to delete the thread. That was the one bit of kind advice you'll get from me, for your sake. No, better you leave it up so people know to avoid you on the Woody Allen boards. Also, it wasn't your opinion that prompted me to voice my annoyance with you. It was the very fact that you chose to start a thread on such a dim-witted, fist-inducing subject. Movies without cell phones are dated. See how lame that is? Sorry, but it's your thread topic, chump. Next you'll insist that movies that don't show computers with internet capability are unwatchable because they're dated.

Additionally, you've certainly lost... at being an individual of worth. Your mind is clearly feeble and your attempts at being acid-tongued are both futile and grating. No one of your inferior mental capabilities could ever get to me, so don't flatter your worthless self.

On a friendlier note, thank you for providing so much entertainment with your general inanity.

reply

I'll quote you verbatim a few days back "You'd be wise to delete this thread".
Now it's "No-no, I don't want you to delete this thread".
You have no idea do you. I clearly have gotten to you. You keep responding to every post with more lame backhanders - that miss. A mental midget.

Is Bogie talking to you kid, urging you to keep posting??

You know....he's not real.

reply

And read what I actually wrote first up. I never said this MOVIE is dated. Human frailty and losing and ultimately finding your real self is timeless. I said in the opening thread, the one you're in a straight-jacket over, I really LIKE this film. It's one of my favourite Woody films. Some of the about phone jokes - ie Frozen Tundra 6 - are great. What powers those jokes is what dates the jokes to a degree now, and will in the years to come. Young people with a short attention span and scant regard for anything other than what they experienced in their lifetime, won't understand as they care little of what came before them. Much like watching an old movie with a running joke of someone washing clothes by hand and running them through a ringer would be dated now, doesnt necessarily make the movie dated. Only the joke.

reply

I wouldn't say it's dated, it's just so old now that it's become a period piece. I love the 70's and I like the differences between then and now so I enjoy it immensely.

reply

But the story in no way depends on that. All that's there for is to show you that the guy is obsessed with his job. Today he'd be constantly checking his smartphone. Same thing.

reply

I suppose the OP expected the film's makers in 1972 to anticipate 21st century cell phone use and make the jokes about that instead. So it's dated, BFD. It was made in the early '70s, so it looks and sounds like the early '70s. What else could it look and sound like? The entire "dated" criticism of any film is idiotic.
