Anthology Film Archives will be showing a brand new print of Demy's "The Pied Piper" from February 2 through 8, 2007. Perhaps Paramount will be releasing a DVD later this year.

This site says they have copies to sell but I haven't purchased one myself but if you do can you please tell me if it is worth the price? It is also unclear on the site whether it is being sold as VHS or DVD

I'm very happy to say that it is indeed QUITE good! I just popped my copy in now. Both the DVD case designs and menu designs are utterly atrocious (the resolution on the images and text on the the case are incredibly low and look blown up and the stills on the back look as though someone merely took a screen capture whilst watching the film). That said, the transfer is pretty fantastic. Well above the quality of an old VHS (which as you know was the only option for years) and given a proper letterbox treatment.

I'd had "Donovan Pied Piper" in my eBay saved searches for years and when this finally popped up I giddily nabbed it without hesitation, for $24.95. I found out after the fact that it's readily available at select Target stores for $9.99 and through the Legend Films website (http://www.legendfilms.com/) for roughly $20 inclusive of shipping.

Either way, it's well worth snatching up! I'm sure for many others like myself that have long been waiting that this is a dream come true!

"Mother, I am so far away from everything."

It is a good, interesting film. And it's been marked down to $5 at Target (at least the two I've been in.) As the huckster would say "worth it at twice the price!"

Here's the link on Amazon:

What? Don't you guys live near a Target store? FIVE bucks, and you can have it today.

reply

If it's the same release, Target must be slipping them out early. Naughty.

Legend Films signed a deal with Target for an exclusive sale period of all their "Summer" releases. All the Legend DVDs listed on Amazon for release the first week in June and the first week in July have been for sale at Target since April, and for $9.99 or less, even though the SRP is $14.95 for the titles. If you go to the Legend Films website, under all their June/July titles ("The Pied Piper," "The Possession of Joel Delany," "The Girl on the Bridge," etc.) it says "Now Available at Select Target Stores". If you try to order them from Amazon, it says they're not released until July and that they'll ship you your copy then.

Look, I don't have any stock in Target, I'm just saying... Now and cheaper, or later for more money? It's up to you.

Thanks for the info.

No problem, buddy. After that, it looks like I'll have to go to Best Buy to get the Legend release of the great cult film "Phase IV", since they've made some sort of agreement with them now. A couple of years ago, Universal did the same thing with some of their titles. I have to say it's kind of annoying, huh? Films could be out for months, and one woudn't even know unless one went to the right store.

As David Letterman once said about a guest's film that was opening that Friday in "Select Theaters," "pray to God one of YOUR theaters has been selected." ;-)

Thanks for the tip. Haven't seen Phase IV since it was first released, and really too young to appreciate it. I'm wondering if it lives up to its reputation.

"like if Stanley Kubrick made a film about giant ants".

I think that's actually part of the reason I didn't like the film, watching it when I was 11 years old. It's not about giant ants, it's about super-intelligent normal sized ants. Or as they'd say on MST3000: "normal size.... NORMAL size... NORMAL SIZE!!!"
