My favorite Non-Argento giallo

okay, I'm a huge fan of DArio Argento, so all of his films are my favorites. But out of the gialli he didn't direct, this is one of my favorites. Anyone else feel that way? Also, if your a fan if this film, I reccomend watching La Coda Dello Scorpione. very similar movies. That's another favorite of mine!

This definately stands up to Argento. Great film, more people need to see this!

When I'm not here I'm listening to DEADPIT.COM , HORROR TALK RADIO !!!

that´s a bold statement but i have to agree.

just saw it last week for the first time and it truly impressed me :
the colors , the music, the camera ,the love of deails, the beautiful lead actress..
it has all the good things of a giallo while almost none of the bad.
besides argento´s movies i never saw a better giallo.

and thanx for the tip, i´ll check it out..

It was probably the funniest one I have seen, as far as the lighter moments go. Especially the 2 cops.

We'll have to agree to disagree there. I found All the Colors of the Dark to be too dull a film that was obviously inspired by greater movies (Martino's other gialli, and Rosemary's Baby)

But I do like The Fifth Cord and What Have you Done to Solange?

I agree. This film was a whole lot of fun. I especially enjoyed the sly sense of playful humor. The two bumbling cops on the case were absolutely hilarious in their ineptitude.

I just rewatched this last night as was entertained: great music, camera moves, the acting was decent, and it was well directed. My only complaint is that it wasn't suspenseful. For me the best non-Argento gialli are some of Mario Bava's films like Blood and Black Lace or Twitch of the Death Nerve (I'm also a fan of 5 Dolls for an August Moon which I think is underrated).

I thought it was a great giallo, one of the best I've seen actually, but I was confused by the ending. Who is that woman making the phone call, who is she calling, and what does it have to do with anything?

reply

I would put this on my top 5.

My top 5 giallo's are.

The Bird with the Crystal Plummage
Black Belly of the Tarantula
The Case of the Bloody Iris
Your Vice is a Locked Room and only I have the Key
The Red Queen Kills Seven Times.

and maybe Seven Blood Stained Orchids as a runner up.

I just bought Torso on amazon for 9 dollars, I hope that is good, it should be Martino if a decent director.

My top 5 Non-Argento Gialli…

The Spider Labyrinth (1988)
A Blade in the Dark (1983)
What Have You Done to Solange? (1972)
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971)
Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972)

Spider Labyrinth is a criminally underrated movie; so tight and suspenseful and really creative villains. It should have been part 3 of The Three Mothers Trilogy. Although I do feel bad saying that since I feel Mother of Tears gets more flak that it deserves, but that’s a different conversation completely. And Blade in the Dark is very underrated as well, everybody thinks Demons when you mention Lamberto Bava, but I think Blade in the Dark and even Macabre are overall better films. And Michele Soavi’s performance is Blade was unforgettable. No surprise with Solange and Mrs. Wardh, total classics there. And I’ll give the last spot to Fulci’s Don’t Torture a Duckling, even though the dummy at the end was a total joke.

I couldn’t really get into Case of the Bloody Iris. Some good parts like the stripper fight scene but nothing that really impressed me. Edwige Fenech is a babe though so it’s all good.

Another Argento fan and this film easily rivalled him at his most playful. Very humorous, stylish, slight twist as to who the killer was, great photography and use of colour, especially in the basement scene.

Thanks OP and others for more recommendations.

I've seen a lot of Giallo movies and along with The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh, The Case of the Bloody Iris and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage are my three favourites. Iris just has that strange juxtaposition of fresh effervescent innocent erotica and brutal murders, which come off even more brutal because the female characters are so adorable, plus Edwidge Fenech is at her luminous best in this film, she literally glows. I adore the ending it's as if the character of Jennifer is so accessible as to be just a phone call away....
There is nothing in cinema today that comes anything like close to this sparkling screen gem.

For me, it's one of the worst gialli I've seen. And I love the genre. It was well directed, had a good script, but somehow it was utterly unconvincing. Dialogues were ridiculous, certainly the awful US dubbing made it worse but it wasn't just that. All the scenes felt awkward, unnatural, phony. I couldn't get into it. Even the original title made no sense in the context of the film.
