What was the reason for the women making phone calls?

Question may contain spoilers if you never saw film.

What was the reason for a woman at the beginning making a phone call?
I thought she was a prostitute for the disfigured son of the mother.
At the end, another woman makes the same phone call, and speaks to the same woman, who I believe is the mother.

Didn't the disfigured suspect die in an altercation with the killer and heroine?

Why would the the woman at the end of be calling the mother to meet with her son? Did he survive?

May be the old woman was a lesbian too, because i don't think that his son survived,he seemed to have his throat slit.

I need to watch it a second time but I think the woman was calling the lesbian (the daughter of the killer); I think she ordered the prostitute. The killer was killing prostitutes and women in general in the apartments who he thought his daughter may be attracted to and would corrupt her. He obviously couldn't handle his daughter being a lesbian.

Now I know it appears she dies but I think the end scene was to show that she didn't die at all, may just be disfigured. She says something like, "Come up, I'm alone." Which she would be as her father is dead.

I think the burned man and his mother are a plot decoy, a red herring. I need to watch it again though so I could be wrong.

I think you're right, Nrbarton. I think it was the now-disfigured lesbian calling up another female prostitute.

I just watched this film tonight. It's excellent!

the lesbian daughter of the professor was killed. the call at the beginning was a prostitute calling sheila for an assignation. the prostitute was killed by sheila's father in the elevator.

the call at the end was just another prostitute calling a client. it had nothing to do with the plot.

I think it was the lesbian daughter they were calling. It makes sense as the clue to the murderer is in that opening shot and phone call. Very clever.

I think the ending could also be seen as a trick ending - all along we thought the lesbian daughter was the caller in the opening, but the trick ending reveals there is a DIFFERENT lesbian in the hotel making calls!

Way too deep guys. Simply they are both prostitutes and that is the number they use to get their next hook up. Don't think there's any other meaning than that.
