The children's art was all done by Nisei artist Arthur Okamura, who is still around although retired. More about him here

He also wrote this book, on how to make cute toys out of paper and stuff you have lying around the house -- very much like the classic How to do nothing with nobody all alone by yourself:

(I'd like to see what the kids in Bendo would do with this stuff)

Come to think of it I wish they'd been able to show the Christmas pageant in the film, but that would have blown their effects budget no doubt.

They would not know who Jesus was so they wouldn't have a Christmas pageant.

All you need is some string and a button and you can make spinners (a popular Depression era home made toy).

Um, yeah, the book says they had a Christmas pageant at Bendo. They made cardboard reindeer and set them flying around the classroom.

Plus Henderson makes it clear they found out about Jesus very soon after the landing, as they learned more about earth people and culture. In "Tell Me A Story" she says they had a similar body of religious literature and a guy they called Our Brother whom they believed to be the same as Jesus.
