Is there any indication or mention of why Niles is bringing all those cattails into the apple cellar? We see him taking them apart and scattering the fluffies everywhere, which looks neat. But do we know why?

In Tryon's novel the 'twins' have read a story about The Snow Kingdom and are trying to reproduce it in the apple-cellar. It also adds lots of fuel for the scene at the end.
