If you disliked it - you didn't understand it.

A well thought out horror. Sorry mad slasher fans - people weren't being chopped into pieces every five minutes. Get a life.

I loved the film. I will admit, the first time I watched the movie it was very different than what I expected, but I loved it anyways. It is a very unique film and I can think of nothing else like it.

Saw this with my family years ago, since we all liked horror movies anyway. I liked the fact that it was a non-exploitative, really good, low-key horror flick---it didn't have a lot of shock jumps or anything, so when something creepy or scary happened, it had more impact. Liked it, though----not your typical horror drama. The director, Robert Mulligan, made a lot of good, understated, low-key dramas in that era----I think this was his only horror film. One recent film that reminds me of The Other is a German film called Goodnight, Mommy---the ending of that film reminded me of The Other, big-time.

I didn't like it, but not because it was slow, not gory or as you say, "people weren't being chopped into pieces every five minutes". The cinematography, music and acting give it a feel of a TV movie. The scene where he imagines flying like bird is quite embarrassing. The secret is painfully obvious well before the reveal at the hour mark and the ending is over the top.

One thing I appreciated was the boy not being aware of his evil actions. He didn't wear a devilish smile behind people's back but was a lovely little boy. This makes the film more effective than LeRoy's The Bad Seed.

Perhaps in future instead of denouncing everybody that doesn't like something you do, maybe you might try to explain your views on it and you could change someone's mind.

The film seems to have a polarizing effect on people - they either like it or loathe it with very few in the middle. As to everything you say about it ('70's lemonade commercial' quality, kind of laughable flight sequence, some of the obvious hints about the 'big reveal', the vertiginous score) I would have to say that they are some of the primary reasons why I feel as I do about the film - with the exact opposite reactions, however.

But the threads on this topic are almost always dominated by trolls who wish to throw their vitriol out on fans who have professed their admiration for the film simply to cause disruption...so you'll understand the responses from people who enjoyed it (and who don't take that advice about not feeding trolls.)

You have every right to your opinion - right or wrong - but I have the feeling that it's not going to get a very civil reception here. Just a thought. Liking or disliking a film isn't usually done for rational reasons, anyway.

There are any number of films that others praise as masterpieces or the end-all and be-all of film-making that I find unwatchable, and the converse...but I don't ever go onto those boards to state my opinion - because I know exactly how people will respond there. I'm not going to change any minds, nor am I going to try, no matter how valid (or not) my observations may be.

So, I agree to disagree with you about The Other. No disrespect implied.

I agree. I just got done watching this and only the small minded could hate this movie. It was way complex and psychological to be boring, unless the viewer chooses to disengage because they can't be entertained without CGI and constant violence.

What an ignorant comment; I understood it perfectly..it isn't exactly complex; and I didn't like it. I found it to be ridiculously melodramatic and mostly pointless. I didn't like the style in which it was filmed either, and the "shocking twist" just wasn't worth having to endure 90 minutes of watching two boys running around a farm while their mother throws herself around the house in a melodramatic fit. This movie is unknown for a reason; it isn't good..

I thought it was surprisingly good. The young actors who played Holland and Niles were both effective, Mulligan seemed to have a way with getting quality performances out of young actors. There are a few shocking surprises in the film, I won't spoil, but the kitchen scene with the barrel is truly the stuff of nightmares. And, of course, the final scenes raise a few questions. 8/10
