great midnight movie!
I just watched this on IFC and both of Bava's films which Ive seen so far,(this and the legendary Black Sunday) have a certain quality which make them perfect for a late night or midnight viewing.

For some reason, the sound on the IFC prints of both MASK OF SATAN and BARON BLOOD is atrocious. I wish they'd address that. Something like that can leave people with a bad impression of even a great movie.
That said, IFC has done a real service in running those movies, and I wish they'd get more of them. Bava has long had the love of genre enthusiasts, but I've always thought his films could draw a much bigger audience if they could get a little exposure. If you're just discovering him, I envy you--it you stick with it, you've got some really wonderful cinematic experiences ahead of you (and yes, most of them are ideal for midnight movies).
Absolutely, I am (not that you could tell by my reply history) a HUGE fan of the horror genreand first saw Black Sunday at some point last year. I'M not sure if you have noticed but I beleive "FLIX" shows Hammer films from time to time in the middle of the night
BARON BLOOD is one of those films that I simply won't watch at night!

I had no idea Bava had also directed this film. When I saw Black Sunday on tv I thought it was great, then a few nights later they showed Baron Blood and I thought it similarly good but never bothered to see who directed either.
shareI agree. The scenes in the top of the tower, where they are reading the incantation to bring back the Baron are so creepy. It used to scare me to death as a kid watching it on television and did again when I finally found the DVD. Both incantation scenes are downright scary, especially the first. The blood coming under the door--creepy! It's not what you see that makes it scary--but what you don't and think it coming. Also creepy is the painting with the face scratched out. Maybe it's just nostalgia taking, but this guy is right. It's a good late night movie with a wonderful 70's feel to it. They just don't make them like this anymore.
shareI thought this film was a lot of fun. The whole cast all play their parts with admirable sincerity, with Joseph Cotten the stand-out as the supremely suave and mysterious Alfred Becker.
300 bios and counting.
