Dubbing almost ruined this flick

I hate to be the guy that judges foreign films based on the translations, but the dubbing in this flick is so bad that I couldn't get into the movie as much as I wanted to. Much of my misery was caused by Elke Sommer's dub "actress" who was so whinny and grading that the tortures of the sadistic Baron looked quite tolerable in comparison.

There really needed to be a subtitling option on the DVD.

reply

I honestly didn't know it was dubbed! 

I thought the movie was actually scary.

The music coincided well with the eerie atmosphere.

reply

I love the music and it is quite a good movie despite the dubbing, but would be a much better one without it.

Yea, they shouldn't have dubbed it. They should've kept the orig. voices and then just had subtitles. 

What other movies would you recommend?

I've seen "Black Sunday" & "Black Sabbath."

reply

Those are both good. Have you seen 'The Long Hair Of Death'? It's a bit like BS except that the "witches" are the protagonists (closer to real life). If you're looking for anther good Bava movie, check out 'Twitch Of The Death Nerve' or 'Kill, Baby, Kill' Have you seen anything by Dario Argento? He's made a lot of good Italian horror...

dallorfw,

no, I have never seen "the long hair of death" nor "twitch of the death nerver," or "kill, baby, kill."

regarding, Argento, yes, I've seen one of his movies that "from beyond," one, I think is what it was called.

Did Argento direct "the sentinel?" I've seen that one and it was really bizarre; esp. the ending.

reply

'From Beyond' is a Stuart Gordon effort. 'The Sentinel' was made by Michael Winner (though, frankly, I don't think he had a winner with 'The Sentinel'. Just sayin')

Dario Argento is this guy: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000783/reference

dalldorfw,

Oh, I see what you're saying.

I won't judge you if you liked it. I'll just be judging your taste, ar-ar! Anyway, I'm sure you're like Argento.

Now, I remember what Argento directed that I saw! 

It was Suspiria!

I liked the soundtrack to it @ the beginning of the movie, but the movie itself was just so bizarre coupled with those black poster lighting effects with the weird colors. LOL

Did you like Suspiria?

It seems like a lot of people liked it.

It's just I like movies that are more linear vs. abstract movies where there's not necessarily a linear plot.

What other movies do you like & recommend?

reply

I like 'Suspiria', but I think he phoned in the ending. Most people think it's Argento's best, but I think he's done better, like 'Deep Red' or 'Phenomena' Check those out.

'Suspiria' does have a pretty coherent plot, it's just that they surreal imagery is place front and center so it's kind of easy to focus all your attention on that.

yea, the surreal imagery is blinding! LOL

You might also like 'Zombi'. It's the only Fulci horror movie I can think of that DOES have a coherent story.

sounds scandalous! 

reply

Here's a scene from 'The Beyond' which will help you get the idea about Fuci's hatred for eyes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdTqRntlb_s

You might not like 'The Beyond' as much though, as it doesn't have a very coherent plot.

reply

is the same movie where they go to a hospital near the end of the movie and then get trapped by zombies in the hospital and the main characters end up in limbo, or is that another Fulci movie?

If this is the movie where the two main characters attempt to escape and are in a hospital and they end up in limbo, then I've seen this movie before.

reply

That's the one. How'd you'd like it?

reply

It was good. I saw it, I think on TV or DVD, a few years ago and earlier in the 80's.

What other horror movies do you recommend?

The ending was so bizarre & the music eerie!

reply

Werewolf Of London
Island Of Terror (I think it's only on VHS still)
Flesh For Frankenstein
Blood For Dracula
Terror Firmer (if you're a Troma fan; you might be a little lost otherwise as it is made up of inside-jokes. Well, there is still some stuff you'll get otherwise but being familiar with Troma helps)
Night Of The Creeps
Silver Bullet (based on 'Cycle Of The Werewolf' by Steven King)
Old Dark House
Homicidal
Straight-Jacket
Basket Case 1-3
Brain Damage
Slither
Big Ass Spider
Them!
Bloodbath At The House Of Death
The Tingler
It's Alive!

And if you're interested, here's my attempt at a slpatterpunk story:https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/3l7by5/degenerates_nightmare/

You're under no obligation to look at it, but you're interested, you should read it quickly before reddit deletes it.

If you like Kevin VanHentenryck in those movies, you should check out 'Brain Damage'; he has a cameo where he's...holding a basket. Bwahaha!

Sounds cool! what other movies do you like & watch? what about tv series? 

reply

You mean besides macabre *beep* Well, I like 'Argo'. Sure, it's a mainstream Oscar-flick, but I liked it anyway. Call it a guilty pleasure.

'Gold Rush' is another favorite. You gotta love any movie where someone eats his shoe. I've always said that.

TV-shows? 'Naked City' is terrific (it's also a movie), 'Mork & Mindy' is also terrific for the first three seasons (there's a reasons it only lasted four. It was turning into shazbot). I've started watching a show I haven't heard of until about a week ago when I picked the entire series up from the library; it's an action/marital arts show called 'Cobra' staring Micheal 'American Ninja' Dudikoff! Well worth checking out if you're in the mood for a good b-action rush! Warning: 'Cobra' is not for vegans as it is chock-full of cheese.

World's Greatest Dad
Escape From New York
La Dolce Vita
Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls
Russ Meyer's Up!
La Strada
The Big Gundown
Martin
Norman...Is That You?
Killing Of A Chinese Bookie
Catch-22 (great book too!)
Kiss Me Deadly (Also a good book. Part of a series)
Branded To Kill
The Forbidden Zone
Animal House
Lady Snowblood 1&2
Electra Glide And Blue
Bloody Mama
The Intruder
Foxy Brown

Some more conventional ones: Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies (with SW, I'm referring to the original trilogy), Robocop, Halloween, Night Of The Hunter, This Is Spinal Tap, Night Of The Living Dead.

I've heard of Escape from NY w/Kurt Rusell and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, the sequel to Valley of the Dolls, and the rest I've NEVER heard of.

I ♥ the Indiana Jones movies & the orig. Star Wars trilogy too. Robocop is good. The 1st Halloween is definitely scary & as part of tradition I like to see every Halloween.  I've heard of Night of the Hunter & This is Spinal Tap, but I've never seen either movie, yet.

"Night of the Living Dead" is so creepy! It STILL scares me!  The first part where Barb & her brother @ the cemetary scares me the most; esp. when he says to Barb, "They're coming for you, Barbara." LOL

That ALWAYS scares me to this day.

reply

'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls' is "not a sequel; there has never been anything like it!" That's the tagline, but it's actually more of a parody

"I've heard of Night of the Hunter & This is Spinal Tap, but I've never seen either movie, yet."

See them; see them now! Your god commands you! (You're god being me, of course)

Wait, you've never heard of 'Animal House'? I'm not sure that's true. Come to think of it, I should have put that one in the "more conventional" list.

Oh, have you seen 'Crimewave'? It's a very offbeat, very dark comedy written by the Cohen Brothers and directed by Sam Rami (a perfect match, actually). Basically it's a spoof of poverty row crime-thrillers from the thirties and forties and it plays like a Three Stoogers film on every drug imaginable. You might have fun with that one.

reply

Oh yea, I've heard of Animal House. I just haven't ever seen it.

I've also never heard of "Crimewave." Sounds like a good movie. 

The original actors spoke English too. It was the way that these films were made in Italy, they didn't record the voices during the shoot, it was easier to record them in the studio afterward.
