That modern Coke machine in the castle seemed rather odd

Either that, or this movie was clearly financed with support from the Coca Cola company, and they needed a product placement scene?

Yes, but you have to remember that in the movie, they were supposed to be setting up the castel to be a modern day hotel. So of course there has to be a Coke machine!! If you look closely in other shots, you can also see an exercise room and a swimming pool haha :P

It's strange, though, if they are setting up the castle to be a modern-day hotel and yet the Joseph Cotten character purchases it at auction and then lives in it privately. I guess Bava was not paying attention to that part of the story except where it suited his needs.

Or they were just very European. There are vending machines right inside the front doors of Notre Dame Cathedral, so a Coke Machine at Baron Blood's doesn't seem far-fetched.

That is funny, but I didn't give it much thought since they were working on the castle. LOL

It seemed like a rather clunky case of product placement. If the castle dwellers needed Coke, why wouldn't they just grab it out of the icebox? Did they actually have vendors servicing the Coke machine?

I thought it was like a metaphor of the film itself. The movie was just between the the classic gothic Hammer films and the modern and gruesome slashers. The coke machine in the old castle kinda reflects that.
