What's going on with the color blue?

The opening credits are in blue, the first shot is literally filled with the baby-blue sheets and pillow cases, and there is something blue in virtually every shot throughout the entire film - clothes almost constantly; cars, several at a time; a wall or a picture hanging on a wall; an architectural detail; the sea, where the blueness seems emphasized; even windshield wipers that would normally be black. I found this very distracting, looking for "what is blue in this shot?" Of course blue can represent a mood of sadness, but light blue doesn't really work for that. What are other viewers' reactions or guesses about this emphasis on blue?
