Cool Seattle Underground site

I was going to write a post about the cool, creepy, gothic, atmospheric gloomy underground lost city of 'Old Seattle'.

I know it was all make-believe. I've visited Underground Seattle on the tour twice. It's nothing like in the movie. It's just darkened, ruined, emptied streets; nothing really much to see. The movie underground Seattle is actually the downtown Los Angeles Bradbury building, set-up to look dark, ruined, and derelict for the scene.

Still, it was very, very effective. The 'underground Seattle' scene made a strong impression upon me.

I'm not so certain the Bradbury Building was used for this film. Right on Pioneer Square (where the Underground Tour starts) is the Pioneer Building. I had been on this tour in the early '70's (before the film was done), and part of the tour was the (then abandoned) Pioneer Building. It has a very distinctive staircase in the lobby, which I remembered seeing in the film when it ran on TV. After all; the crew was right there at that location, the building would still have been empty and ready to film in. Look at this person's pictures of the interior now and see what you think. It was the Bradbury Building. Watch this at the 6 to 8 minute mark.

As I said, I had been on the Seattle Underground tour, and had seen the interior of the Pioneer Building for myself. Which is why I would have recognized the interior when watching the film. Why dress up the Bradbury Building when the crew was already in Seattle, and the Pioneer Building was (at the time) already derelict?

Shooting schedules, etc. See they film things all out of sequence - probably did all of the remote Seattle scenes in a day or two.
