Time Capsule of Policing

This movie was on TCM last night and it's a great one.

One thing that struck me though was just how dated it is in terms of both police equipment and tactics.

The officers don't carry hand-held radios and have to run back to their car if they need to get an ambulance or back-up.

They all carry six-shot .38 revolvers.

And, most of all, none of the officers wear bulletproof vests. Both times when Roy Fehler is shot, he's shot in an area where a vest would've protected him. He surely wouldn't have been killed at the end if he'd been wearing a Kevlar vest.

It's hard to imagine, when you look at modern police equipment, that officers used to go out on patrol without wearing protective gear.

No shotguns in the 1980s? I thought the good old "riot gun" was a staple of squad cars since at least the 50s.

Now many of them have upgraded to assault rifles.
