Cut when first released in USA

I remember hearing that this film was was cut substantially when first released in the US. Has the cut material been restored in currently available versions? (I seem to remember that, when I first saw the film, Mimi's pursuit of the fat woman seemed to come out of nowhere and only gradually to make sense. When I rented it many years later, it seemed carefully prepared. Perhaps the restored material explains this.)
