Why did they cut the nude scene out of the American version?

In the original chinese version, the hot Italian girl that hits on Bruce at the fountain takes him to her home, then gets naked, while Bruce gets scared and hides in the clothes cabinet. That was a great scene. LOL Bruce isn't afraid of Chuck Norris, but he's afraid of a naked woman! LOL

They should have kept that scene in the American version. Such a pity.

Also, who was that Italian girl? What was her name?

And did Bruce do her, or run back home? It wasn't really clear.

reply

The Italian actress's name is Malisa Longo. http://imdb.com/name/nm0519427/

When Bruce sees her undressed I believe he runs straight out the front door of her apartment, not into her closet. So, I don't think anything, uh, "happened".

Good Day.

Bruce Lee definitely rushed out of the apartment as soon as he saw the Italian girl undressed. As far as I remember the uncut version (more than 15 years have passed since) he did not even look at her properly - he just got a glance of her reflection in a mirror that stood in front of him and that was enough. Bruce ran away like lightning. No other male action movie star would have the guts for this, I guess (any other would have fallen a victim to such a beautiful lady).

Thanks for attention.

reply

I think Bruce ran out because he realized she was a prostitute and he didn't wanna catch a V.D.

Realize that all was good until she immediately stripped when they got in her apartment. That just screams prostitute looking to make a buck off another Asian tourist in Italy.

Bruce in reality was shy with ladies but I think it only shows his nice personality:)

It's in the NEW US Bruce Lee: Ultimate DVD Box Set Version...

Does this scene you guys are talking about take up the whole 10 minutes that have been cut? If not, what else is there?

reply

Nope, not by a long shot. There's a couple of funny scenes at the airport and one in the restaurant, and a couple of scenes that are cut short thoughout the movie. Too bad they left those out they explained his acting weird at the beginning. That and the re-dubbed English dialog made better sense of the storylines than the original. All this stuff made the set worth getting for me.

reply

What is the set your talking about? I have this old vhs set that seems to have all the cut-up copies.

reply

The Bruce Lee: Ultimate DVD Box Set Version mentioned above.

Can someone post or send me the footage?

Your question has already been answered in part, and discussed by other people.

There is an official explanation about that and other comic scenes at the airport having been shot having the Chinese market in view, and never been intended for the American market as the producers thought it would be poorly received there. It may be so, or then it was to erase the cultural clash, and the female partial nudity that was still a no-no in many American states.

About this particular scene, Malisa Longo has been quoted as saying: β€œWhat I shot and [what is on] the film was very different. (…) The role was too small and partly cut.” See: http://www.bruceleedivinewind.com/malisalongo.html

Malisa is more detailed in an Italian interview about the same scene. The scene was shot twice, or even three times despite of a string budget, and this over a period of three weeks. It is evident to me that whatever developed between the Italian Beauty and the Little Dragon in his way from the wardrobe to the street, ended on the editing room floor for all versions.

I repeat after you, "Such a pity."

Maybe, but the '70s was probably the greatest time for nudity in US theatrical films. A quick shot of a woman's breasts wouldn't have been a big deal then or now.

As for Malisa, wow. Just wow. πŸ˜€

No blah, blah, blah!

When the movie comes on the El Rey Network they show the uncut version. I love it, she has great cans.

reply

Happy to report that scene does appear in the US Criterion Bruce Lee Greatest Hits box set version of the film.

sounded like some reaction from stewie griffin. well the reason i watched this years ago was because of the fight between lee and norris, some later bruce lee movie has norris pasted from this and include him in the credits. i expected a much more active and full board to this movie, i thought it was lee's most well known flick with exception from his final (enter the dragon). what a different cool unexpected opening credits, the end credits were weird too. that waitress πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ went all in on the italian gestures, didn't she, by the way, i've never seen so many bowls πŸ₯£ πŸ₯£ πŸ₯£ πŸ₯£ πŸ₯£ at the table eating out of it, also check out that 1960s fashion like room. this movie looked like a comedy at first, and a good fifteen minutes in before any english at all, the dubbing was really out there, like a spoof almost, even norris was dubbed, the uncle gave a really long speech at one point, and wow the nudity of the western girl came unexpected, one of the bad guys at first looked like ben dover from "fletch". what a weird toilet scene. there sure was a lot of the boxes πŸ“¦ falling and crashing. i don't know about your version but my picture froze once. did the cat 🐱 get any credit 🐈.

you stayed backstage,
while other ladies came to dance,
in my soul got pain,
its a low down dirty shame,
this dance floor im leaving now,
longing back to a better time,
when this was a party place,
and you were here everyday.
