I first heard of Gortner when seeing 'Earthquake' in '74.

Being the child of a Southern Presbyterian minister in the 60s/70s (he's still active in 2012 at 81), I can honestly say that this is nothing like what I experienced. Granted, in high school, I and a few friends snuck into a Pentecostal Church, to watch the "performances" - but, we found it so "disturbing," that we didn't last long.

I enjoyed this film. Just last night, I was surfing cable, and came across a contemporary "church service" that rivals any scene in this documentary. While Gortner could then appear as somehow genuine, despite his admitted fraud, these current "preachers" just ooze slime. The "Marjoe" tribe is unknowingly exposing itself, while the present TV crop doesn't give a damn just how blatant the manipulation comes across to millions.

Unrelated question - Gortner's voice in "Earthquake"......why is it so "different"? Perhaps it was his acting style...I just remember him giving me the creeps in that film. Here, only a few years earlier, he's quite likable.
